SiRF star III GPS chipset.
Other hardware features include a daylight-readable 3.5-inch display, and an SD card reader. Satmap says the device also offers a built-in media player.
Apparently mindful that hikers may be away from power outlets for extensive periods, the company has given the Active 10 a variety of power options. It can be operated by three standard AA alkaline (or rechargeable NiMH AA) batteries, or a large 3.7-volt 2900 mAh lithium polymer battery. It can also be powered by a 12 VDC car adapter or a 240/120-volt power supply.
Satmap has obviously also paid special attention to its target market. Retailers will be selling SD cards that contain highly detailed maps -- in 1:25,000 or 1:50,000 scale -- of every U.K. national park, according to the company, which also offers customers a custom mapping service.
According to Satmap, the park maps use raster graphics (shown at right), for accurate reproduction of the source maps. These maps are then overlaid with GPS data, with a "You are here" icon and a "snail trail" feature that illustrates the route just taken.
In contrast, the vector graphics more typical of GPS units are used on the U.K. road maps bundled with the Active 10; nonetheless, these are highly detailed, with minor roads, railway lines, waterways, and coastlines all being clearly marked, the company said.
Also cited by Satmap are onboard route planning and waypoint establishment capabilities. For enthusiastic hikers who like to gauge their travel speeds, the unit can log performance statistics and upload them to a PC once the user returns home, the company says.
