Interestingly, only seven countries are represented among the 30 finalists, with China alone having nearly half, at 14 entries. The US comes in second with five teams followed by India (four), Romania (three), Mexico (two), and Brazil and Australia with one each. An Australian team
won last year's student challenge with an intelligent watering system.

The competition challenges teams of four undergraduate students (plus a faculty advisor) to design a computer-based system that solves a real-world problem focused on this year's theme of "Preserving, protecting and enhancing the environment." The applications must run on top of Windows CE, executing on the x86-based eBox II platform (shown at right).
The top five winners following the final competition next month will receive:
- 1st Prize -- $8,000
- 2nd Prize -- $6,000
- 3rd Prize -- $4,000
- 4th Prize -- $3,200
- 5th Prize -- $2,400
Project reports submitted by all 30 finalist teams are available
