Microsoft will reveal details regarding the next generation of Windows Mobile -- codenamed Magneto -- at next month's Mobile and Embedded Developers Conference (MEDC) in Las Vegas, according to an article published this week by CRN.

Additionally, Magneto, which is widely expected to be renamed "Windows Mobile 2005" when it is released, is part of a "more comprehensive mobile strategy" for Microsoft, the article says.

"Microsoft aims to kill BlackBerry," the article quotes an unnamed source as saying. The article reports that Magneto, in conjunction with Exchange 2003 Server Pack 2, will implement "push technology" similar to that provided by RIM for the BlackBerry. Magneto will also unify what are now separate implementations of Windows CE for Pocket PC and smartphone devices, according to the article.

Microsoft is "on track to freeze the Windows Mobile 2005 ROM code in April," the article says.
