Mobile Crossing has announced "significant upgrades" to its Windows Mobile-based handheld navigation devices. The Waypoint 100 and Waypoint 200 can now download maps directly from the Internet using a Bluetooth-enabled cellphone, according to the company.

The two devices appear to share a common hardware platform based on a 400 MHz PXA 260 processor with 64 MB of SDRAM and 160 MB of Flash, of which 32 MB is reserved for the Windows Mobile Premium Edition operating system, and 128 MB is available for map data. The devices include both CompactFlash and Secure Data card expansion slots, as well as built-in IrDA and USB 1.1 interfaces. The 3.5-inch QVGA (240 x 320) LCD display is driven by a NVIDIA MQ1188 video controller.

The Waypoint 100 (shown at right) is supplied with a CompactFlash GPS receiver while the Waypoint 200 comes with a Bluetooth GPS and Bluetooth CF transceiver. Both units come standard with a car kit with integrated charger and amplified speakers, and a home kit consisting of a desktop charger USB cradle.

According to Mobile Crossing, the 128 MB of on-board Flash is enough to hold one North American regional map and the nationwide "long haul" map of major highways. The company says the devices' built-in MapLoader software enables downloading and managing maps directly over the Internet, using a Bluetooth-enabled phone, without the need for maintaing maps, or map installation software on another computer.

Once downloaded, maps can be saved to CF or SD memory cards. Mobile Crossing offers a 1 GB CF card with all of the US and Canada maps preloaded.

The WayPoint 100 "National Edition", which includes the complete set of North American maps, has a suggested retail price of $600. The WayPoint 200 National Edition is listed at $750. Mobile Crossing notes that street prices for both products are often lower.
