NetMotion Wireless has released a beta of the next version of its wireless VPN (virtual private network) software, Mobility XE 7.0, featuring expanded scalability for large deployments. Additionally, the company says it is working with RSA Security Inc. to achieve technical certification for two-factor authentication.

To meet demand for large-scale mobile application deployments, Mobility XE 7.0 now supports up to 15,000 simultaneous users -- three times that of previous versions -- according to NetMotion. Based on typical mobile worker usage patterns, this increase in scalability can support organizations with more than 35,000 mobile workers, the company claims.

NetMotion says its collaboration with RSA Security aims to certify Mobility XE 7.0 as interoperable with RSA SecurID two-factor authentication in time for the final version 7.0 release planned for summer.

Two-factor authentication combines something a user knows -- a passoword or PIN -- with something the user has -- an "authenticator" such as a smartcard.

The Mobility XE 7.0 beta is available now, according to the company. Those interested in trying the beta software are asked to submit their requests via email.

The company recently added support for Windows Mobile 5.0, to Mobility XE version 6.
