Windows Mobile devices gain SIP-based FMC support

Oslo-based Paradial has updated its firewall/NAT traversal software suite to support SIP-based fixed mobile convergence (FMC) services -- including IP-audio and IP-multimedia -- on the Windows Mobile 5.0 platform. RealTunnel enables wireless carriers and service providers to cost-effectively provide optimal connectivity and call completion on all the major operating systems, according to the company.

RealTunnel is described as open and SIP-compliant software that allows SIP clients to work with virtually any firewall and network in a non-intrusive way, and without requiring any reconfiguration. Paradial says it supports all SIP client features -- including presence, chat, voice, video, application sharing, and multiparty conferencing -- in a network-independent manner.

RealTunnel consists of a small footprint client along with the RealTunnel Firewall/NAT server. An enterprise proxy may also be included in the configuration, according to Paradial. RealTunnel software components can be provided as SDKs (software development kits).

The RealTunnel hardware comprises signaling servers and media servers. A signaling server can handle up to 10.000 concurrent client registrations using TCP, significantly higher using UDP, according to the company. The signaling server supports up to 35 calls per second. These numbers are based on a 4 GHz Intel P4 with an 800 MHz FSB (Front Side Bus), 1 GB of 400 MHz RAM, and a 40 GB hard drive, Paradial says.

The media server can handle up to 250 concurrent voice calls using G.729, G.723, or other equivalent codecs over TCP. The media server can handle up to 200 concurrent voice calls including 128 Kbits/seccond video over TCP with a media delay of about 1 ms using essentially the same hardware configuration as the signaling server, according to the company.

According to Paradial CTO Espen Skaeran, "The availability of RealTunnel on Windows Mobile allows mobile operators and service providers to expand their product offerings by easily deploying IP-audio/IP-multimedia services with maximum call completion rates to end-users on mobile devices. This RealTunnel release also shows Paradial's commitment to making RealTunnel available on all major end user platforms and to support all popular IP-communication protocols."
