Intermec has introduced a rugged handheld that is UL-certified to be safe for use in potentially explosive environments. The 730 I-Safe, based on Windows Mobile for Pocket PC, allows companies in industries such as pharmaceuticals and petrochemicals to standardize on one computing platform for both hazardous and non-hazardous...

        environments, according to Intermec.

Intermec says that the 730 I-Safe is UL-certified for Division 1 (where hazards are always expected to be present), Class 1 (environments with gases), Groups C (ethyl ether, ethylene, carbon monoxide, nitromethane, or similar) and D (acetone, ammonia, butane, ethanol, methane, natural gas, propane, gasoline, or similar) usage.

The 730 I-Safe runs Windows Mobile for Pocket PC on a 400 MHz PXA255 processor, and is equipped 64 MB of RAM and 64 MB of Flash. It includes built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and an SDIO card slot.

The device incorporates Intermec's EV10 scan engine based on the company's VISTA scanning technology. Intermec claims that the EV10 is the industry's first bi-linear CMOS sensor to use state-of-the-art active pixel sensor (APS) technology. Its high scan rate of 200 to 500 scans/sec. and depth of field up to 50 cm (19 inches) allows it to read any type of barcode -- including poorly printed, damaged, wide, or high density barcodes -- and operate optimally in any lighting condition, according to Intermec.

The 730 I-Safe is expected to be available for delivery in the second quarter.
