NewStep Networks, a supplier of fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) software for carriers and enterprises, says it has certified FMC interoperability of a new SIP-based dual-mode (GSM/VoWiFi) handset from Paragon Wireless.

The hipi 2300 runs Windows Mobile and includes a 1.9 Mp camera and Windows Media audio/video support, according to NewStep.

Billed as Paragon's "second generation" dual-mode handset, the hipi 2300 appears to be nearly identical to its predecessor, the hipi 2200, announced last September. In addition to its dual-mode communications functions, the device also includes a 1.9 megapixel digital camera, Windows Media Player for audio and video multimedia support, and a number of security-oriented features. And, like the hipi 2200, the model 2300 is based on Windows Mobile 5.0.

NewStep's says its FMC software runs on its patented "Converged Services Node" (CSN), a server platform for enterprises and carriers. The FMC software's "dual-hode handoff" enables a user to move "seamlessly and transparently" between cellular and WiFi services without disrupting an active call, the company claims.

Paragon says it sells its customizable VoWiFi handsets -- and licenses its technology -- primarily to wireless device-makers, cellular design houses, IP-PBX vendors, ISPs, and wireless operators, according to the company

NewStep chief marketing officer Craig Gosselin stated, "Handset manufacturers' continuing interest in interoperability with our solution clearly demonstrates not only the value of the NewStep offering but also the forward momentum of the service convergence market."
