Secure Computing has released software that aims to turn Windows Mobile phones into authentication tools. By generating one-time-use passwords, SafeWord MobilePass replaces dedicated hardware tokens and frees users from having to remember permanent passwords.

SafeWord MobilePass is intended to protect Check Point, Nortel, and Cisco VPNs, as well as Citrix applications, Outlook Web Access, and Windows Domains. It operates in tandem with the company's SafeWord PremierAccess authentication management software, which runs on Microsoft Active Directory Domain Controllers or on Windows 2000/2003 servers.

According to Sally Hudson, research director at IDC, "Two-factor authentication solutions like SafeWord have been successful at protecting remote connections to corporate networks and applications. With products such as MobilePass, the mobile workforce has the flexibility and convenience of using the mobile device they already carry with them everywhere."

Secure Computing says SafeWord MobilePass runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 6 devices. It requires 250 KB of RAM and 600 KB of storage.

In addition to being available for Windows Mobile devices, SafeWord MobilePass comes in a version that runs on Windows laptops or PCs. Both are available now, though pricing information was not disclosed.
