Sybase has released a new version of its rapid application development (RAD) tool for mobile and wireless applications. New features in PocketBuilder 2.0 include native support for global positioning systems (GPS), barcode scanners, Smart Phone platforms, cameras, and PocketPC phones, according to the company.

Sybase says PocketBuilder lets developers rapidly build mobile applications and then test on the desktop, device, or emulator, whichever is most convenient. Prototypes can be quickly created to get user feedback while viewing on a desktop or the device itself.

The company lists the following key features for PockBuilder 2.0:
        • Easy to use integrated development environment IDE with built-in object oriented language allows development of applications "in hours, not months".

        • Patented DataWindow technology provides data access, processing and presentation specifically targeted for mobile devices without coding.

        • Wizards simplify synchronization, allowing data to be stored locally to minimize battery draining connection time, but still provide up-to-the-minute data for mobile users.

        • INK controls and image support for entering handwritten notes.

        • Native support for global positioning services (GPS), barcode scanners, Smart Phone platforms, cameras, and PocketPC phones. PocketBuilder 2.0 also provides support for phone short message service (SMS).
PocketBuilder 2.0 requires a development environment running Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2 or Windows XP on a 400 MHz or higher Pentium-compatible processor. A free evaluation copy of PocketBuilder is available for download here.

Sybase says it has posted some free on-line videos at its website to help developers get started with PocketBuilder.
