Spb Software House has released a "major update" to its Today screen PIM plug-in for Windows Mobile devices. Spb Diary 2.0 introduces several new features, including photo contacts, handy contact dialing, full stylus-free navigation, a Special Events tab, and PhatNotes integration, according to the company.

Photo contacts enables a user's most important contacts to be represented by photos right on the Today screen. Dialing becomes a simple two-tap process -- tap to open the detailed contact pop-up; tap to dial. Spb says this is particularly useful for Pocket PC Phone Edition devices.

Stylus-free navigation uses the handheld's navigation buttons for one-handed control of Diary, a much-requested feature according to Spb -- a contact can be selected and dialed with "just a few hardware button presses." The company claims that Diary is the only mobile Today plug-in that supports "action-and-hold," the hardware equivalent of tap-and-hold with a stylus.

Despite the new features, Spb says that Diary v2.0 is faster, uses memory more efficiently, and takes the same storage space as the previous version 1.7.6.

Diary is currently available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Simplified Chinese languages, and supports Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 5.0 devices, according to Spb. However, Pocket PC 2002 devices are no longer supported, the company says.

The software can be purchased from the company's online store for $19.95, and a discount is available for previous owners. A 15-day free trial download is available here.
