(Click here for a larger view of the Asus P750)Aside from its chunky styling, there is little the P750 lacks when considered as a phone. It includes tri-band (800/1800/1900) GSM, and High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) data mode, which offers downloads at speeds up to 3.6Mbps.
Asus has employed the TI OMAP850 processor, clocked at 200MHz, in its 500-series phones, such as the recently introduced
P526 and
P527. This senior model steps up to Marvell's PXA270, clocked at 520MHz. It has 256MB of flash memory and 64MB of RAM, with storage expandable via a microSD slot.
The device also offers GPS, via the ubiquitous SiRF
starIII chipset. Here, two of Asus' proprietary applications are relevant. Travelog enables users to record their travel routes via GPS, then export data in Google Earth format. Location Courier, meanwhile, can send a user's position, either on demand or at preset intervals, to as many as five contacts via SMS messages.
Additional hardware features on the P750 are its 2.6 inch QVGA display, Bluetooth, and 802.11b/g wireless networking. The device has both a three-megapixel autofocus camera and a forward-mounted, VGA-resolution camera for videoconferencing.
The main camera is used by another supplied application, Business Card Recognizer. As the name implies, this allows a user to take a picture of a business card, then have its information recognized by optical character recognition (OCR) software and copied into a contacts list.
Other added software on the phone includes Newstation, a reader for RSS feeds, and Auto Cleaner, intended to make it easier to shut down unwanted applications. Finally, Asus has added world clocks to Windows Mobile's standard "today" screen.
