(Click here for a larger view of Navigon's 33 max PND)Navigon recently pulled its PNDs from the U.S. and Canadian markets, though it continues to offer support and to tout its software for OEM customers. In Europe, however, the company reportedly has significant market share, and this is attested to by the release of the company's new 33 max series device. The unit is offered as the 3310 max, with maps of 40 different European countries, or as the 3500 max, focusing on Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Both the 3310 max and the 3500 max apparently use the same hardware, which includes a 4.3-inch touchscreen display with unspecified resolution, 64MB of RAM, either 1GB or 2GB of flash storage, and a microSD expansion slot. The devices run Windows CE using the
SiRFatlasIV SoC that was announced earlier this week. According to SiRF, the SoC includes a 500MHz ARM11 application processor, a 64-channel, multi-satellite system "location engine" with high sensitivity and rapid TTFF (time to first fix), and an integrated video post processing accelerator.
Navigon didn't say if the 33 max devices include Bluetooth, media playback, or other frills. The core PND functionality sounds ample, however, with the following touted features:
- MyRoutes, which displays up to three possible routes, adapted to personal driving style, the day of the week and the time of day
- Reality View, which shows roads "realistically, complete with lane markings"
- Lane Assistant Pro (pictured on the unit at the top of our story), which "helps you to make your way through even the most hectic traffic situations"
- Clever Parking, which displays nearby parking areas shortly before a destination is reached
- POI Click, which allows clicking and selecting a point of interest (POI) on the map, providing essential information such as addresses, opening hours and telephone numbers
Hardware specifications listed by Navigon for the 3310 max and 3500 max include the following:
- Processor -- 500MHz SiRFatlasIV, with ARM11 applications processor and GPS receiver
- Memory -- 64MB of RAM and 1GB or 2GB of flash storage
