According to a posting on the team's blog, the chat will take place from 10:00 AM PDT to 11:00 AM PDT. This time around, no specific subject was listed, but "key hot topics from the XPe forums and newsgroups" will be covered, according to the company.
Previous chats held by the XP Embedded (XPe) team have ranged from the very technical to those that merely cover marketing and licensing issues. For example, a
Jan. 29 chat was devoted to XPe's Hibernate Once Resume Many (HORM) technology, which is a mechanism for quickly rebooting the same XPe image any number of times. In contrast, a
Dec. 4 chat covered such basic questions as "What is the difference between XPe and Windows CE?" and "What is an embedded system?"
Thursday's chat might well see broad topics being discussed, such as the overall future of XPe. That's because last week at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, Microsoft announced that the next version of XPe will be released this fall, renamed
Windows Embedded Standard 2008. It will still be Windows XP-based, but will also include "the most-requested Vista technologies," such as a new version of Internet Explorer, a revised RDP (remote desktop protocol), a new media player, and updated .NET Framework technology.
Approximately two years later, Windows Embedded Standard 2010 will be released, according to Microsoft. This product will complete the process of moving Microsoft's x86-specific embedded operating system over to the Vista codebase entirely. For more details, see our earlier coverage,
