Microsoft's MSDN developer site has published a transcript of the Windows XP Embedded online "chat" session held earlier this month. In the chat, several Microsoft "XPe experts" answer developers' questions relating to Windows XP Embedded SP2 "Feature Preview 2008" and the recently released "Image Difference Engine."

        Questions included:
        • What is Windows XP Embedded?

        • What is the Windows XP Embedded Feature Preview 2008 all about?

        • How is the enhanced write filter (EWF) used? What can I prevent writes to? Does it break any applications?

        • Is there a more precise release date for Feature Preview 2008, other than Q4-'07?

        • Are software restriction policies (SRP) available in XPe/WEPOS [Windows Embedded for Point of Service], and are they heavily used by Windows Embedded devices?

        • With lifecycle support on XPe SP1 ending soon, can Image Diff be used to back port updates released to XPe SP2 to devices that remain on SP1 (both technically and legally).

        • Is there any update on the availability of the batch update due April -- is it still on track?

        • What are the enhancements to USB boot and FBWF expected for FKPK2008?

        • How is the migration from XPe SP2 to FP2008 using the Image Difference Engine? I've not tried the image difference engine yet and am curious to see how well it performs.

        • A logistics question: Since we can't ship Feature Preview 2008, how can we manage CTP (Community Technology Preview) based eval builds and builds that we would need to ship? If the tools are updated with the CTP then we can't build shippable images anymore, right?

        • Are there any plans to add the dependency listings back into the XPe Help screens for component help? Any idea why this was taken out? This seemed very useful in the past.

        • I would love to see some of the new kernel changes that Vista has implemented with relation to service startup/shutdown.
To learn the answers to these questions, read the complete chat transcript, here.
