        Windows XP Embedded heads for Common Criteria security certification

        Microsoft announced this week that Windows XP Embedded is currently being evaluated for certification under the U.S. Common Criteria Evaluation and Validation Scheme (CCEVS). CCEVS evaluation is a program jointly managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Security Agency (NSA), and is meant to establish a national program for evaluating information...


        technology products for conformance to the International Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation.

        CCEVS certification is based on meeting a set of security functional and assurance requirements defined for high-performance information and software technologies. Windows XP joins Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003, which are also currently under evaluation.

        According to Microsoft, Windows 2000 was the first Microsoft desktop and server software product to be submitted for CCEVS certification, and it was recently awarded Evaluation Assurance Level 4 (EAL4) certification, for a PC distributed operating system.
