Yukyung has released a MID (mobile internet device) claimed to wake from sleep mode in just four seconds -- and offer 200 hours of standby. The Viliv S5 runs Windows XP, offers a "Cube" interface with haptic feedback, and has an optional GPS receiver, says Yukyung.
Yukyung, which has released previous Windows XP MIDS such as the X70, P2 NAVI, and X2, says its new S5 has a novel sleep mode that lets the device standby for up to 200 hours without draining its batteries, yet wake up in between three to four seconds. The S5's 6200mAh lithium-polymer battery is good for up to six hours of operation at a stretch, the company adds.
Another novel feature of the device is its so-called Cube interface, a Windows overlay that allows assigning programs to buttons known as "bubbles," then switch between them "with the flick of a finger." Via a built-in vibrator, the MID provides haptic feedback when any of the bubbles is pressed, according to Yukyung.
The S5 weighs under a pound (0.93 pounds, to be exact) and measures 6 x 3.3 x .96 inches, the company says. Its 4.8-inch screen is available in a basic configuration packing 800 x 480 pixels, or another that squeezes in 1024 x 600 pixels. Meanwhile, there's no hardware keyboard, but the device does include a five-way controller and mouse buttons, and, apparently the haptic feedback also works to make use of the S5's on-screen virtual keyboard easier.
The S5 uses Intel's Atom Z520 processor, clocked at 1.33GHz, along with the expected SCH US15W companion chip. Also included are 1GB of DDR2 RAM, apparently non-expandable, and 30GB or 60GB hard disk drives.
Connectivity is courtesy of 802.11b/g wireless and Bluetooth 2.0, while a GPS receiver based on the SiRF starIII chipset and a DMB (digital multimedia broadcasting) TV receiver are both optional. Finally, the S5 includes USB host and client ports, plus a "multi I/O" connector intended for an optional cradle, though Yukyung supplied no details of the latter.
