Windows XPe thin clients gain "hot desktop"

IGEL Technology has updated its Windows XP Embedded-based thin client firmware. The new release includes a Citrix Password Manager and "Hot Desktop" feature claimed to reduce login time by up to 90 percent for roaming workers in critical applications such as health care, IGEL said.

Hot Desktop uses a smart card from Gemalto to store a user's profile. When the card is inserted into an IGEL device, the user is asked for a security PIN and the desktop is replicated onto the new device without the need for a lengthy, traditional login. IGEL claims that application access is available in less than 10 seconds for both server-based applications running on a Citrix Presentation Server and local thin client applications such as terminal emulation or Web browser sessions.

"In an emergency situation -- when a matter of seconds can make all the difference -- healthcare professionals are often faced with the dilemma of either acting immediately to attend to a patient or taking an extra moment to secure sensitive patient information," said Greg Appel, technical director for ACS Healthcare Solutions. "By tightly integrating with Citrix Password Manager and Gemalto smart cards, IGEL thin clients allow healthcare professionals to make the natural choice -- treating their patients quickly without fear of jeopardizing patient confidentiality."

According to Citrix, Hot Desktop eliminates generic login accounts that pose a problem for compliance with privacy regulations. User logins, logouts, and password changes can be archived for accountability and auditing, and "walk-away timeouts" increase security.

IGEL's updated Windows XP Embedded-based thin client firmware -- with support for Citrix Password Manager and Hot Desktop -- is available immediately, according to the company.
