AT&T has announced a novel Windows Mobile 6.1 phone with two slide-out keyboards. The Pantech Matrix Pro (left) runs Windows Mobile 6.1, and provides worldwide 3G operation, HSDPA/HSUPA, a 2.4-inch QVGA (320x240) display, and a two megapixel camera, says AT&T.

The new Matrix Pro is clearly designed as a successor to the
Pantech Duo (right), offered by AT&T since 2007. Both phones have numeric keypads that can be pulled down from below, and QWERTY keyboards that slide out from the side.

Like its predecessor, but unlike most of today's Windows phones, the Matrix Pro apparently does not include wireless networking. However, the device can make voice calls in more than 200 countries, and access data in more than 160, AT&T claims, thanks to quad-band (850/900/1800/1900MHz) GSM and tri-band (850/1900/2100MHz) HSDPA/HSUPA.

AGPS (assisted GPS) capabilities, requiring a $10/month subscription to AT&T's Navigator service, provide voice-guided turn-by-turn directions, maps, and traffic alerts, according to AT&T. Meantime, the device also includes a two megapixel camera with 4X digital zoom, speakerphone capabilities, and voice dialing.

According to AT&T, the Matrix Pro uses a 528MHz Qualcomm MSM7201A processor, with 128MB of RAM, 256MB of flash storage, and a microSD expansion slot. Since it does not have a touchscreen, the phone runs the Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard operating system, with an "intuitive sliding panel interface" and threaded SMS.

Finally, the Matrix Pro includes a 1320mAH battery that is said to offer up to three hours of talk time, and a standby time of up to 10.5 days.
