Fourier says the Nova5000 provides the "educational performance" of a laptop within the cost profile of a handheld device. The unit boasts a 7-inch 800 x 480 color display, and it features instant on/off capability so that no classroom time is lost booting it up or shutting it down. Its long battery life is intended to last a full school day, according to the company.

The Nova5000 is available in three versions -- Entry level, Science cart data logger, and Full curriculum. According to Fourier, all three models include the Inspiration learning software and share the following hardware features and specifications:
        • Processor -- PXA255 at 400 MHz
        • Memory -- 64 MB RAM, 128 MB NAND flash
        • Display -- 7-inch 800 x 480 TFT LCD
        • I/O ports:
          • 10/100 Ethernet
          • 2 USB 1.1 host
          • USB slave
        • Dimensions -- 7.32 x 9.33 x 1.70 inches (186 x 237 x 43.2 mm)
The Data Logger model adds the following features:
        • 12-bit, 8-channel A/D for data logging
        • Touchscreen
        • Earphone and microphone ports
In addition to the features of the Data Logger, the Full Curriculum model includes:
        • WiFi

        Inspiration

Inspiration says its eponymously named learning software is aimed at students in grades 6 through 12. It is based on "proven visual learning methodologies" that help students develop a deeper understanding of difficult concepts and build stronger critical thinking skills.

Fourier CEO Tom Fitzgerald stated, "Providing students with personal computing devices allows teachers to integrate more project-based, hands-on instruction into the curriculum. Now, through our partnership with Inspiration Software, teachers using the Nova5000 can take one-to-one computing to the next level by integrating visual learning instructional strategies across the curriculum."

Inspiration will ship preloaded on all of Fourier's Nova5000 computing devices beginning in the 2006-2007 school year, according to the company.

Pricing of the Nova5000, as of Q4 of 2005, started at $419.
