Wirelession Electronics announced a MID (mobile internet device) that runs Windows CE 6.0 on an ARM Cortex-A8 processor. The W1060 has a 600MHz CPU, a seven-inch touchscreen display, WiFi, Bluetooth, and an optional GPS receiver, according to the company.

Wirelession says its W1060 uses an ARM Cortex-A8 core, along with a dedicated graphics processor, though the CPU's manufacturer is not specified. According to the company, the device also includes 256MB of RAM, an unspecified amount of flash storage, and a microSD slot that supports up to 16GB of additional memory.

The W1060 runs Windows CE 6.0 (below left), and it's said text can be entered into the unit either via an onscreen keyboard (below right) or via the included Transcriber handwriting recognition software. According to Wirelession, the MID also includes Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, and an alternative to the latter known as WMPlayer.

According to Wirelession, video support includes AVI, MPEG4, MPEG2, WMV, and H.264. Audio playback, meanwhile, encompasses AVI and MP3 formats, and the device sports dual speakers, claimed to provide "3D surround" sound.

OUR VERDICT:
If the manufacturer can speed up Web browsing on this device, it could be a contender
According to Wirelession, the W1060 has a seven-inch touchscreen display that provides a desktop 800 pixels wide and 480 pixels high. The MID comes with 802.11b/g/n wireless networking, Bluetooth, and an optional GPS receiver, the company adds.

It's claimed the W1060's 3000mAh battery provides from five to eight hours of operation. This specification was confirmed in a review published by the Carrypad website, in which author Heath Brown notes that the device booted up in under 12 seconds, and provided good video frame rates. (However, Brown adds that the MID provides sluggish web browsing, apparently because of some memory problems that haven't been resolved in its current firmware.)

Features and specifications listed by Wirelession for the W1060 include:

  • Processor -- ARM Cortex-A8 clocked at 600MHz
  • Memory -- 256MB of RAM; flash n/s
  • Display -- 7-inch touchscreen with 800 x 480 pixel resolution
  • Expansion -- microSD slot
  • Networking:
    • WLAN -- 802.11b/g/n
    • PAN -- Bluetooth
  • GPS -- optional
  • Other I/O -- USB port
  • Battery -- 3000mAh; five to eight hours operation
  • Size -- 7.08 x 4.33 x 0.59 inches (180 x 110 x 15mm)
  • Weight -- 13.75 ounces (0.39kg)
Further information

The Wirelession W1060 appears to be available now, priced at "$220 FOB China." Further information may be found on the Wirelession website, here.
