Wyse announced plans to incorporate Windows Embedded Standard 7 in a "new family" of thin clients to be released during the third quarter. It's said the new product line will target the company's "most sophisticated customers," offering RDP (remote desktop protocol) 7.0, the Citrix Online Plug-in, and VMWare View 4.0.1.

Following HP, Wyse is the latest company to announce a shift to Windows Embedded Standard 7 for its thin clients. As the componentized version of Windows 7, Windows Embedded Standard 7 has the potential to provide users with the latest software technologies, while also delivering the smaller footprint and security that are desirable for a thin client.

Windows Embedded Standard 7 advantages cited by Wyse include the Windows Aero interface, RDP 7.0 for providing "seamless connectivity to Windows Server 2008 R2 and virtual desktop infrastructure scenarios," and support for Active Directory's Domain Join and group policies. The platform also features technology, including Internet Explorer 8, that can "drive rich, immersive user experiences," plus the ability to develop "green" solutions with smart power management APIs, the company says.

According to Wyse, its build of Windows Embedded Standard 7 will include both the Citrix Online Plug-in and VMware View 4.0.1. Citrix's Online Plug-in enables HDX technology, which, according to Citrix, gives thin clients such features as USB 2.0 support, plug-and-play printing, real-time audio compatible with VoIP, and "true multi-monitor support." VMware View 4.0.1 provides seamless mapping of local USB peripherals and printers onto a virtual desktop, Wyse adds.

Wyse said it already provides RDP 7.0, Internet Explorer 8, the Citrix Online Plug-in, and VMware View 4.0.1 on its existing R-, C-, V-, and X-class thin clients. The company did not detail any further changes between these devices and the new line planned for the third quarter.

Bob O'Donnell, program VP for clients and displays at IDC, was quoted as saying, "End users want flexibility, security and reliability in their virtualization initiatives. Wyse's support for Windows Embedded Standard 7 provides all three."

Ashwin Kulkarni, senior product manager for Windows Embedded at Microsoft, stated, "Thin clients and specialized devices throughout the enterprise continue to demand rich user experiences and streamlined connectivity to enhance efficiency, support productivity and meet industry demands. We're pleased to work with Wyse and our partners globally to deliver Microsoft's latest technology innovations through Windows Embedded Standard 7 ... for thin clients and other specialized devices for the enterprise."
