Wyse rev's its Windows CE 5.0 thin client OS

Thin client specialist Wyse Technology has introduced a major update to its "Wyse-enhanced" Windows CE 5.0 platform supporting its extensive line of thin client devices. Wyse Feature Release 2 (WFR2) will be offered both in new devices and as an upgrade for current customers, according to the company.

Wyse thin client terminals running Windows CE internally have included the Winterm S30 (pictured above), the V series, and the 3150SE (shown at right).

The company's new OS release adds a "performance-enhanced" Citrix ICA 9.0 client, developed through a collaboration with Citrix, according Wyse. Other significant enhancements in the WFR2 release, as listed by the company, include:
        • The first industry-standard Atheros-based wireless 802.11a/b/g solution for the Windows CE platform; compatible with leading Wi-Fi solutions from Cisco, Dlink, Linksys, TRENDnet, and others

        • The industry's first thin client support for USB WiFi LAN adapters

        • Support for WPA-2 and PEAP-GTC authentication protocols for strong 802.11x wireless authentication

        • Integrated Ericom PowerTerm terminal emulators

        • New Terminal Services Advanced Client (TSAC) functionality that connects and launches RDP sessions from within Internet Explorer as ActiveX components

        • Improved RDP performance under low bandwidth conditions
Anthony Armenta, Wyse's director of product management, says the company's Windows CE 5.0 customizations were accomplished "on the Platform Builder level," rather than being based on modified Windows CE Shared Source code. However, Windows CE Shared Source enabled Wyse developers to debug drivers and other aspects of the company's customized Windows CE 5.0 thin client platform. As a result, according to Armenta, Wyse has been able to feed back feature- and code-improvement requests to Microsoft.

Typical Wyse customizations, Armenta says, have been in areas of integrating device drivers, enhancing wireless functions, improving USB drive performance, and optimizing the Citrix ICA client. In particular, the company has developed a unique -- and highly valuable -- function that enables remote management of thin clients, over the Web or a LAN, "from anywhere," Armenta adds.

Ricardo Atuna, Wyse's vice president of business line management, added, "The WFR2 release increases the value of Wyse thin clients in the enterprise and delivers on the top features requested by our Fortune 500 customers."
