i-mate unveiled its first Windows Mobile 5.0 devices for distribution in the U.S., Latin America, and Canada, at the CTIA show in Los Angeles Sept. 13. The two devices are the JAQ, a PDA/phone with a QWERTY keyboard, and the SPL, a candybar-style tri-band GSM/GPRS handset.

The JAQ (pictured above) is a PDA-format device with a full QWERTY keyboard reminiscent of the recently announced HTC S620. The quad-band device is based on a TI OMAP850 processor, and is equipped with 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of flash memory. Its 2.8-inch QVGA landscape screen is slightly larger than the S620's 2.4-inch screen. But while the S620 comes with both WiFi and Bluetooth wireless, the JAQ omits the WiFi.

The candybar-style SPL (shown at right), in turn, is based on an OMAP730 processor clocked at 200 MHz, and is endowed with 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of flash memory. It features a 2 Mpixel CMOS camera that records video at up to 7 fps, according to i-mate. Like its JAQ sibling, the tri-band GSM/GPRS SPL supports Bluetooth, but not WiFi.

        Availability

Several on-line vendors are already offering the JAQ for around $500. The SPL, on the other hand, does not seem to have reached the market.

Both devices are offered with a free 10 MB hosted Microsoft Exchange email address at clubimate.com, according to the company.

"We are glad to finally be a resource to users in the Americas," stated i-mate CEO Jim Morrison.
