Two new "convergence" devices from Elanza Technologies combine the flexibility of a PC with the ease of use of a consumer device. The devices -- a Webphone and a Videophone -- provide Internet access, Voice over IP (VoIP) communications, and web videoconferencing, without the complication of a computer, and at a lower cost, according to Elanza.
Elanza Webphone
The Webphone, based on an Intel StrongArm processor running Windows CE, unites Internet access, telephone, VoIP, email access, and video conferencing within a single device through what the company calls "unified support systems technology."
An optional Smart Card reader provides a high level of security for any type of Internet transaction, according to Elanza. The company suggests the following three uses for the Webphone's optional Smart Card security:
- Terminal Access -- Controls how the Webphone works. For example it can enable or disable access to the Internet, email or international calls.
- Network access -- The Smart Card holds a set of network access parameters -- user name, password, DNS, email addresses. Swipe the card and you're logged in.
- Application access -- The Smart Card contains the necessary parameters for secure access to a remote application such as user ID code and digital signature.
Elanza markets the Webphone primarily as part of an integrated and customized solutions for select client groups, but also to end-users who can't afford or don't need all the power of a desktop PC.

Elanza Videophone
Expected to ship in October 2004, the Elanza Videophone is an enhancement of Elanza's Webphone concept, incorporating a video camera and running Windows CE .NET 4.0. Elanza expects the Videophone to be the first web videoconferencing product based on a Windows CE embedded software platform.
The unit incorporates a 10.4-inch LCD display with 800x600 resolution, and its multimedia support accomodates MP3, MPEG 1 and 2, and JPEG protocols. A TV tuner is available as an option.
