The Universal Electronics Inc. (UEI) NevoSL universal remote control allows users to access and control digital media and other devices throughout the home from a single wireless handheld controller. According to UEI, the device can control virtually all home theater and stereo equipment, enabling users to "play any song, display any digital picture, and view any movie in any room from the palm of their...

        hand."

The NevoSL is powered by an embedded computer running Microsoft Windows CE 4.2 on a 203MHz Samsung embedded processor, equipped with 64MB SDRAM and 32MB nonvolatile Flash memory.

The device includes a high-power consumer-infrared (CIR) interface that can communicate with a wide range of consumer electronics equipment. UEI supports the unit with an extensive database of CIR codes, which are claimed to provide compatibility with virtually all home entertainment devices.

The NevoSL's user interface consists of a 3.5-inch diagonal QVGA (320x240 resolution) LCD color touchscreen display, along with 17 programmable keys and a scroll wheel. Setup is simplified by means of configuration wizards, combined with auto-discoverery of digital media content.

In addition to its CIR interface, a Wi-Fi (802.11b) interface permits the device to communicate with PCs and other devices connected to a home wireless network. NevoMedia Manager software, running on the device, implements the industry-standard Universal Plug-n-Play (UPnP) protocol to discover other network devices. It can then browse available digital content. UEI says the NevoSL can stream music, share photos, and play movies on most UPnP-compliant devices. The NevoMedia Manager software is derived from UEI's Nevo 2.0 for Digital Media, introduced earlier this year, that can convert Pocket PCs into audio/visual, digital media, and home controllers.

NevoWare software, which comes on the NevoSL's installation CD, provides media serving and media playing functions to/from the PC and most UPnP-compatible digital media devices.

Another application that comes with NevoSL is NevoStudio (pictured below), a suite of tools that runn on a home PC and allows users to customize the NevoSL's interface and control functions. The tools are said to provide drag-and-drop capabilities, site map visualization, button and background galleries, remote function emulation, support for all standard image formats, and fast downloading of configuration files to the NevoSL.

If desired, one or more IP-addressable NevoLink "intelligent" bridges can be used to extend the reach of NevoSL throughout the home. The compact (3.8 x 3.0 x 1.2 inch) device includes an Ethernet LAN interface, and six additional CIR interfaces. A Wi-Fi interface can be added to the NevoLink via the Ethernet interface, if desired.

UEI expects to begin shipping the NevoSL universal remote control and associated software and hardware accessories during the second quarter of 2005, priced at $800.
