WINDOWS CE POWERS COMPREHENSIVE HOME MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
CasaWorks showcased the Cielo Home Management Gateway at the Consumer
Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, in January 2004. The Windows CE
based device serves as the hub of a comprehensive home management system
that provides the functions of traditional high-end home control and
automation systems, but in an easy-to-use and affordable manner,
according to CasaWorks. The system enables homeowners to control their
household electronics, including lighting, climate, security, and
entertainment systems, using a PDA, PC Web browser, Web Pad, or wireless

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS:  WINDOWS EMBEDDED DEVCON 2004
Microsoft's Windows Embedded group is now accepting abstracts for the
Windows Embedded DevCon to be held June 28 through July 1, 2004 in San
Diego. "The primary objective of this conference is to provide deep,
technical content on Microsoft's embedded family of operating systems
and tools," says Microsoft.

WINDOWS-POWERED THIN CLIENT DEVICE INTEGRATES VOIP
Reddline Systems announced that it has added VoIP services to its thin
client "voice and information terminal," which also offers streaming
video, audio, and Web access, and is designed for use with a standard
analog telephone handset.  Reddline says its Ranger V6 Quad/Player
enables users to make telephone calls over the Internet while browsing
the Web using Microsoft Internet Explorer.  The device is based on a
Celeron processor running Windows CE.

WINDOWS CE DEVELOPMENT COMPANY FORMS, LAUNCHES FIRST PRODUCT
Entelechy Consulting and Sintium Ltd. have combined to form a new
company, EmbeddedFusion, which intends to supply hardware, software, and
training products to companies developing systems and devices based on
Microsoft's Windows CE embedded operating system.  EmbeddedFusion's
initial products include development platforms, Windows CE BSPs (board
support packages), Windows CE training, and custom design services.

BSQUARE LAUNCHES VOIP, TELEPHONY, WIRELESS DEVELOPMENT SERVICES
Bsquare announced a new offering of "advanced system integration
services" aimed at companies developing devices implementing VoIP,
telephony, and wireless communications protocols.

FREE PEER-TO-PEER POCKET PC VOICE-CALLING SOFTWARE
Skype Technologies has launched a free beta release of peer-to-peer
voice calling software for WiFi-enabled handheld devices running
Microsoft's Pocket PC software platform.  PocketSkype is a "thin"
version of Skype, the company's original peer-to-peer voice-calling
software for Windows PCs which was released in August 2003.  Like Skype,
PocketSkype can be used to make free, unlimited, and unmetered calls
anywhere in the world.

ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE SUPPORTS WIRELESS DEPLOYMENT ON POCKET PCS
Symantec Corp. announced its latest antivirus software for handhelds.
The company says its "AntiVirus for Handhelds Corporate Edition 3.2"
software supports Windows Mobile based Pocket PCs, can be wirelessly
deployed, and is fully device resident, without requiring
synchronization with a desktop system.

NEW HIGH-PERFORMANCE SYNTHESIZABLE 32-BIT CORES SUPPORT WINDOWS CE
MIPS Technologies is shipping four new 32-bit synthesizable processor
cores that support Windows CE.  The new "24K" cores, expected to appear
in customer-implemented silicon before 2005, target high-volume
applications such as broadband access, wireless, networking, digital
television, and office automation.

INTEL ADDS FOUR NEW MOBILE PENTIUMS
Intel announced four new mobile Pentium processor variants this week.
The latest Pentium M and Celeron M processors range from 900 MHz to 1.4
GHz clock speeds with power consumptions from 7 to 24.5 Watts.

INDEPENDENT ANALYSIS FINDS NEAR-EQUALITY OF AMD, INTEL 64-BIT X86'S
An independent analysis by In-Stat/MDR's Microprocessor Report indicates
that the 64-bit x86 architectures from AMD and Intel are almost, but not
quite, identical.  Near-100% software compatibility is possible, but in
some cases, programs written for one 64-bit architecture may not run
properly on the other 64-bit architecture, according to the report.

UNWIRING CHIPS WITH OPTICAL INTERFACE TECHNOLOGY
While still some years from viability in a production environment,
optical chip-to-chip interconnect technology was recently demonstrated
by a team from the Intel Components Research Lab in a fully functioning
prototype device that attained an aggregate bandwidth of more than 8
giga-transfers per second.  DeviceForge has published a whitepaper that
describes the state of the technology in general, the architecture and
basic design of the Intel prototype device, and the implications of its
development.
