MIPS DEMO'S SYNTHESIZABLE  32-BIT CORES RUNNING WINDOWS CE 5.0
MIPS showcased its new MIPS32 24K synthesizable 32-bit microprocessor
cores running Microsoft's Windows CE 5.0 operating system at this
week's annual MIPS/Microsoft Executive Summit in Redmond WA.  MIPS also
announced that a version of its Malta BSP (board support package) for
Windows CE 5.0 will be available at the time of Microsoft's full CE 5.0
product release later this year, and that its Malta BSP for Windows CE
4.2 running on the 24K core family is currently available for download.

INTEL UNVEILS NEXT-GEN XSCALE PROCESSORS
Intel took the wraps off its next generation XScale mobile processors
This week, at the Intel Developer Forum in Taipei, Taiwan. Intel says
that its new PXA27x processors (formerly code-named "Bulverde")
incorporate several new technologies aimed at the multimedia, low power,
and security requirements of advanced cell phones and wireless PDAs.
According to Intel, the processors can support full motion video
conferencing on mobile phones and DVD-quality video playback on PDAs.

REFERENCE PLATFORM TARGETS PXA270-BASED HANDHELD DESIGNS
Intrinsyc announced support for Intel's newly unveiled PXA270 XScale
processor and 2700G multimedia accelerator silicon duo.  Additionally,
Intel and Intrinsyc jointly showcased a new PDA-style development
platform that targets developers of next generation wireless PDAs and
comes with "out of the box" support for Pocket PC 2003 and Windows CE .NET.

DEVELOPMENT SHOP BOASTS CONTINUED WINDOWS CE SUCCESS
Vibren Technologies reports that it has been awarded its 14th contract
to develop Windows CE .NET based software for companies creating new
products based on Microsoft's Windows CE .NET embedded operating system.
The projects include wireless devices, media streaming, set-top boxes,
and scanners, Vibren says, and involve "many of the best-known, global
100 companies in the world."

USING THE INTERNET CONNECTION FIREWALL IN WINDOWS XP EMBEDDED
In Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 1, Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF) is disabled by default.  This two-part technical article published
on Microsoft's MSDN website provides details about how to enable ICF by
creating a custom ICF component, adding the custom component to a
configuration, and then deploying and testing the run-time image.

WINDOWS MEDIA AUDIO DECODER SILICON PASSES COMPLIANCE TEST
Tensilica announced that its Xtensa HiFi Audio Engine's Windows Media
Audio (WMA) decoder has passed Microsoft's compliance tests. According
to Tensilica, the successful compliance test is important because it
ensures that system-on-chip designs incorporating the Xtensa HiFi Audio
Engine will play all files encoded in the WMA format.

A PREVIEW OF .NET COMPACT FRAMEWORK 2.0
Microsoft's .NET Compact Framework version 2.0 brings many features and
managed API enhancements, according to an article by Michael Juntao
Yuan.  Yuan provides a few words of background on the .NET CF, a bit of
history, and a brief summary of the new features included in version
2.0, which was unveiled at the recent Mobile DevCon in San Francisco.
