MICROSOFT ANNOUNCES ULTIMATE ARCHITECT III CONTEST
They've taken it on the road and in the water! What next? The Sumo ring!
Microsoft has announced the "Ultimate Architect III Contest," which
will take place at the upcoming Windows Embedded Developers' Conference
(DevCon) in San Diego, Calif., June 28 through July 1.

WINDOWS XP EMBEDDED HEADS FOR COMMON CRITERIA SECURITY CERTIFICATION
Windows XP Embedded is currently being evaluated for certification under
the U.S. Common Criteria Evaluation and Validation Scheme (CCEVS).
CCEVS evaluation is a program jointly managed by the National Institute
of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Security Agency
(NSA), and is meant to establish a national program for evaluating
information technology products for conformance to the International
Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation.

RESEARCH REPORT:  UML 2.0 REDUCES DEVELOPMENT COSTS
Embedded market consulting and research firm Embedded Market Forecasters
(EMF) released a report entitled "Reducing OEM Development Costs
and Enabling Embedded Design Efficiencies Using the Unified Modeling
Language."  According to EMF, "data shows a consistent four month
average delay with 56 percent of all embedded designs completely behind
schedule.  Eleven percent of embedded designs are cancelled."  The
26-page report is available as a free download from EMF's website.

WINDOWS EMBEDDED POWERS IP-ENABLED VOD SYSTEM
Two hundred channels, and nothing good on TV?  If you've had enough of
reality shows and reruns, cop dramas and commercials, there is an
alternative.  It's called Akimbo, from a startup company of the same
name. According to the company, Akimbo is "the first fully functional
marriage of TV and the Internet, combining easy access to new and fresh
video content with the comfort of watching it on your TV".  Best of all,
the Akimbo Player set-top box is powered by Windows CE!

THINGS GO BETTER WITH . . . POCKET PC?
Symbol Technologies announced that Coca-Cola Enterprises plans to
purchase a customized version of Symbol's recently introduced MC9000-G
Pocket PC based handheld, for use by 28,000 Mobile Workers in North
America and Europe.  The devices will be used as part of a comprehensive
enterprise mobility solution for strategic logistics, delivery, and
service applications "to maximize efficiencies and customer service."

INDUSTRIAL HANDHELD GETS BARCODE AND RFID INPUT
Psion Teklogix unveiled an integrated dual-mode RFID and barcode reader
from Sirit Technologies for its Windows CE .NET based rugged handheld
computer.  The integration of the barcode and RFID reader into the model
7535 is the first step of a strategic partnership that will see Sirit's
RFID reader technology integrated into additional Psion Teklogix
products to support the major RFID frequencies (LF, HF, UHF) and tag
standards (EPC, ISO, etc.).

TWO NEW SECURITY UPDATES FOR WINDOWS XP EMBEDDED
Microsoft recently released two critical security updates that impact a
range of Windows operating systems including Windows XP Embedded.  Both
patches are for Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 1, and Microsoft
recommends that users apply them both immediately.

M2M PHONE GROWTH TO QUADRUPLE THAT OF MOBILE HANDSETS
Though the market for cellular handsets is predicted to grow 10 percent
annually through the end of the decade, a rapidly growing market,
cellular radios for Machine-to-Machine -- or "M2M" -- applications will
see growth of 40 percent annually through 2010, according to the
preliminary results of a report to be published by ABI Research next month.

DESKTOP SYNC FOR WINDOWS MOBILE SMARTPHONES
Intellisync announced that it has added support for Windows Mobile based
Smartphones to its desktop synchronization software.  The latest
software release supports the Motorola MPx200 and Samsung SCH-i600
Smartphones.  OEMs and application developers can license Intellisync's
"sync engine" to develop custom synchronization applications.
