MOT UNVEILS PAIR OF WINDOWS MOBILE POWERED HANDSETS
Motorola unveiled a pair of mobile handsets based on Windows Mobile this
week at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France. Both devices -- the
MPx and the MPx100 -- are part of Motorola's MOTOPro mobile handset
family, which targets "mobile professionals." Both are expected to
become available in the second half of 2004. Check out our news item

drivers. Reliability of these device drivers is critical to overall

TELNET/SSH CLIENT FOR POCKET PC RELEASED AS PRE-ALPHA V0.1
A version of PuTTY has been released for the Pocket PC platform.
PocketPuTTY v0.1 pre alpha is based on PuTTY, a free implementation of
Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms.

TRUSTED COMPUTING TOOLKIT TO SUPPORT WINDOWS CE, WINDOWS MOBILE
SafeNet announced plans to offer a "trusted mobile computing toolkit"
that support TI's OMAP Secure-Mode processors and ARM's TrustZone
technology-enabled processors on devices running Microsoft's Windows CE
.NET and Windows Mobile software platforms. The toolkit is intended to
enable wireless phone and consumer electronics platform manufacturers to
protect copyrighted content, provide digital rights management services,
reduce fraud, and support a range of revenue-driving services including
multimedia content and games.

BITSTREAM RELEASES BETA OF SMARTPHONE BROWSER
Bitstream announced that the beta version of its browser for mobile
phones is now available. According to Bitstream, ThunderHawk SmartPhone
Edition preserves actual web page layout on the small displays of mobile
handsets. A unique "split screen mode" enables users to quickly find
their orientation on a web page.

MULTIMEDIA-ENABLED APP STACK SUPPORTS WINDOWS MOBILE BASED PHONES
Access released NetFront Mobile Client Suite, a multimedia-enabled
application stack for handset manufacturers. The suite features a web
browser, multimedia messaging client, personal information manager
(PIM), SyncML client, SMIL player, and Java support. It also features a
customizable user interface architecture.

SUITE OF 3G AND WIFI DEVELOPMENT TOOLKITS SUPPORTS WINDOWS CE .NET
Radvision has added 3G and WiFi features to its line of toolkits for
broadband mobile wireless application development. The company says its
toolkits now support all the main application protocols needed for the
delivery of one-way, bidirectional, and multipoint data and multimedia
content over a broadband mobile network.

OPENNETCF PROJECT RELEASES SMART DEVICE FRAMEWORK V1.0
The OpenNETCF project has released version 1.0 of its Smart Device
Framework, which the group says enriches and extends the .NET Compact
Framework by adding a rich set of classes and controls.

CIRRUS SUPPORTS WINDOWS CE .NET WITH NEW EMBEDDED PROCESSORS
Cirrus Logic has unveiled ten new embedded processors in its ARM9-based
EP9xxx family. Cirrus claims the new processors are ideal for
applications such as digital media servers, audio/video jukeboxes,
telematic control systems, intelligent house controllers, multizoned
stereo audio systems, Internet radios, industrial controls, KVM
controllers, biometric security systems, and GPS devices.

AMD NETWORK PROCESSOR INCLUDES IPSEC PACKET PROCESSING IN HARDWARE
AMD announced the latest processor in its Alchemy embedded processor
family, the Au1550 "security network processor." AMD says the Au1550 is
suitable for use in networking and remote access devices such as
gateways, network attached storage (NAS) units, wireless access points,
and VoIP applications. Of note, the Au1550 features an integrated
Security Engine which implements the entire VPN packet protocol in hardware.

2ND-GEN OMAP PROCESSORS FOR 2.5/3G HANDSETS SUPPORT WINDOWS MOBILE
Texas Instruments (TI) unveiled its new OMAP 2 processor architecture
for 2.5 and 3G mobile phones. TI says its next-generation processors
based on OMAP 2 will provide features such as interactive 3D gaming, 4+
megapixel cameras, digital camcorders, TV, and more.

NEW SHARP ARM922T-BASED SOC RUNS WINDOWS CE .NET
Sharp Microelectronics says its highly integrated ARM922T-based 32-bit
system-on-chip (SoC) processor, the LH7A404, is now available in
production quantities. Sharp is targeting the 200MHz SoC processor at
high-end mobile, industrial, and entertainment applications.

Exideas has released version 2 of its software for text entry on Tablet
PCs and mobile devices. Exideas claims the software provides a fast and
easy text entry alternative for Tablet PCs which can revolutionize the
way people enter text on mobile devices.

INTEL, SONY ENABLE "SHORT FORM" VIDEOS ON WINDOWS MOBILE SMARTPHONES
Intel and Sony Music Entertainment say they've created a mobile
high-quality music video application that enables users to play "short
form" music videos and other Sony Music content on cellphones and PDAs
powered by Intel's applications and cellular processors.

3D AUDIO TECHNOLOGY SUPPORTS WINDOWS MOBILE SMARTPHONE
QSound Labs says it has licensed its 3D audio technology for use in
MiTAC's DigiWalker line of Windows Mobile based smartphones and pocket
PCs, including the recently launched Mio 8390. QSound says its
technology provides a range of digital effects that result in rich, high
definition audio for consumer electronics and mobile devices.

AN INTRODUCTION TO ULTRA WIDEBAND (UWB) WIRELESS
Intel recently outlined plans to drive the development of a complete,
standards-based, common platform for ultra wideband (UWB) wireless
technology. Intel says future UWB technology-based products built on
this platform will enable high-speed transfer of multimedia content
between devices in the home or office, at lower costs and without the
