INTERVIEW WITH SCOTT HORN ON MICROSOFT'S EMBEDDED DEVICES STRATEGY
To provide a sense of its roadmap for embedded devices, Microsoft has
published an interesting interview with Scott Horn, director of
marketing for Microsoft's Embedded Devices Group. Horn defines what
Microsoft means by "embedded devices," sheds light on the goals and
strategy of the Embedded Devices Group, discusses trends and
opportunities in the embedded devices industry, and offers a glimpse of
where Microsoft's embedded activities may be headed in the future.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT INTERRUPT SUPPORT ON WINDOWS CE .NET
In this 8-page technical article from Microsoft's "Get Embedded" series,
Mike Hall and Steve Maillet examine the interrupt architecture of
Windows CE .NET 4.2, and explain how to implement interrupt support on
Windows CE .NET. The article includes a diagram illustrating the

WIRELESS PROJECTION DEMO SHOWCASES NEXT-GEN CE .NET BETA
InFocus previewed a wireless digital projection solution based on a beta
release of an upcoming version of Microsoft's Windows CE .NET embedded
operating system (Macallan). The technology preview took place earlier
this month in Microsoft's Partner Pavilion at the Consumer Electronics
Show (CES) in Las Vegas. According to InFocus, the demo showcased the
capability for wirelessly projected data to be as secure and reliable as
cabled projection.

MICROSOFT'S "MOBILE AND EMBEDDED DEVICES" REVENUE GROWS 66%
Microsoft announced financial results for the fourth quarter of 2003
this week. Q4-03 total revenue was a record $10.15 billion, a 19%
increase over the $8.54 billion reported for Q4-02. Revenue for
Microsoft's Mobile and Embedded Devices segment for Q4-03 was $63M,
representing a 66% increase over the $38M reported for Q4-02.

WINDOWS MOBILE SURPASSES PALM OS IN 2003 EUROPEAN PDA SALES
Technology analyst firm IDC reports the 2003 Western European handheld
device market experienced its first annual growth in unit shipments
since 2000. Additionally, Windows Mobile based Pocket PC shipments grew
over 70% in 2003 to overtake Palm OS based products, which IDC
attributes to a renewed interest in mobile solutions from large and
medium enterprises.

VNC SERVER RUNS ON POCKET PCS
Wolfgang Beer, a staff member at the Institute for Software of the
Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria, has created a VNC server
that runs on devices running Microsoft's Pocket PC operating system.
Development of "PocketVNC" is still in process, but a "preliminary demo"
version is currently available for download from the project's website.

REPORT: "FULL-FEATURED" HANDSETS TO DISRUPT MOBILE ELECTRONICS SECTOR
Technology research firm Zelos Group predicts that by 2008, sales of
"full-featured handsets" -- mobile phones that incorporate full-featured
operating systems -- will grow to about 290 million units, or about 43
percent of global handset sales. Mainstream adoption of these devices
will have a significant, disruptive impact on the entire mobile
electronics sector in markets for wireless, personal electronics, and
computing technologies.

IEEE 802.1X AUTHENTICATION SUPPORT FOR POCKET PC 2002/2003
Meetinghouse Inc. has released software that offers IEEE 802.1X
authentication support for Pocket PC 2002/2003 and Windows CE. NET
4.1/4.2 based handheld devices. The company says its Aegis Client 2.0
for PPC software supports the WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) standard;
includes radio management features such as Network Access Point
selection and configuration matching, WEP settings, and WPA settings;
and supports multiple authentication profiles to permit automatic
presentation of the correct credentials as the user moves between networks.

BLACKFIN SELECTED FOR MEDIA CENTER EXTENDER REFERENCE DESIGN
Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) announced that its Blackfin processor has been
selected by Microsoft to be part of the standard reference design used
by OEMs and ODMs to develop set-top boxes and televisions incorporating
the Media Center Extender technology that was recently unveiled by
Microsoft at CES 2004.

PHILIPS ROLLS ROLLABLE-DISPLAYS FORWARD
Philips has developed actual prototypes of ultrathin, large-area,
rollable, organics-based displays, and has begun to move the technology
toward an "industrially feasible" production process. The displays
combine active-matrix polymer driving electronics with a reflective
"electronic ink" front plane on an extremely thin sheet of plastic. To
advance the process of productizing the technology, Philips has formed
an internal venture group named "Polymer Vision" within its Philips
Technology Incubator.

REPORT PROFILES "PERVASIVE INTERNET" MARKET
Harbor Research has published a 210-page research report examining the
current state of Internet-enabled device networking -- the "Pervasive
Internet" -- at the start of 2004. The report asserts that "we are
clearly on the verge of large-scale adoption" of pervasive Internet
technology. This summary highlights the findings and features a large
chart showing areas where the pervasive Internet will soon pervade.
