UPS DELIVERS WITH WINDOWS CE/BLUETOOTH RING SCANNERS
UPS recently announced it will begin deploying wireless technologies,
including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, to package facilities and drivers in
Europe as part of a multi-year, global technology upgrade.  The first
part of the deployment involves pager-sized Bluetooth scanners, worn on
the middle finger, which send package tracking data to small Wi-Fi
terminals worn on the waist by package sorters.  The Wi-Fi devices, made
by Motorola and running Windows CE, then send the tracking data to UPS's
computer network, where it can be accessed by customers.  Our news item

WINDOWS CE POWERED HANDHELD GPS TOUTS "SUB-METER ACCURACY"
Thales has introduced a new handheld GPS receiver for geographic
information system (GIS) and other data collection and mapping
applications, that it says "sets a new standard for performance and
affordability." The device is based on an ARM920T processor equipped
with 64MB SDRAM, running Windows CE.

SNEAK PREVIEW OF NEXT-GEN 2 MEGAPIXEL WINDOWS CE SMARTPHONE
WindowsForDevices has received exclusive advance information on a new 
dual-mode Smartphone to be introduced in Asia near the end of this year. 
The device, to be manufactured by Hanvit IT, is said to feature dual 
network CDMA/WiFi support with a built-in 802.11b module, and full-motion 
video from an integrated 2 megapixel camera. Our source, speaking on 
condition of anonymity, asked that the name of the device not be 
revealed at this time.

SOMETHING NEW FOR WINDOWS CE:  A VIRUS
BitDefender Antivirus Labs in Romania has reported what it claims is the
first occurrence of malicious code to infect the Windows CE operating
system used by over 17 million Pocket PCs, smartphones, and other
Internet appliances.  The virus author, known by the nickname Ratter, is
suspected to be part of the famous 29A VX group and created this virus
"not meant to spread," but rather as "a proof of concept code."

CRYPTOGRAPHY APPROACH SUITS RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED EMBEDDED DEVICES
This primer provides a gentle yet thorough introduction to elliptical
key cryptography (ECC), said to be ideal for resource-constrained
embedded systems because it provides more "security per bit" than other
types of asymmetric cryptography.  Find out all about ECC by reading the

DSL TV JUST AROUND THE CORNER, ABI SAYS
DSL TV is coming, says market research firm ABI. ABI's report, "The Rise
of Broadband Video," predicts accelerating DSL adoption rates
accompanied by the rollout of digital movie distribution networks,
creating a $6 billion market for PC-to-TV bridges, as well as growth in
other device segments where Microsoft's Windows Embedded operating
systems are popular.
