SECURE PAYMENT CAPTURE TERMINALS RUN WINDOWS CE .NET
Symbol Technologies has announced a pair of payment capture terminals
that support a broad range of retail applications, including online and
offline debit/credit, signature capture, scrolling line item display,
EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer), gift and loyalty programs, and
advertisements. The two devices share a common embedded platform based
on an Intel XScale processor running Windows CE .NET 4.2. Read our

NEW POCKET PC PHONE SUPPORTS BLUETOOTH
E-ten has introduced the P300B Pocket PC phone, which combines tri-band
GSM/GPRS and Bluetooth wireless communications capabilities, along with
a complete set of PDA features. The device runs Windows Mobile 2003
Second Edition for Pocket PC Phone Edition software on a 200 MHz Samsung

RUNNING WINDOWS CE IN HEADLESS "BLACK BOX" CONFIGURATIONS
Many people mistakenly believe that Windows CE does not support
"headless" devices, also known as "black boxes." (A headless device has
no direct graphical user interface, and may not have any display at
all.) In this paper, which was originally published on Microsoft's MSDN
website, Mike Hall and Steve Maillet dispel some of the myths about
headless operation of Windows CE, and explain how to build a headless
Windows CE OS image.

BROADSTREAM AND HUMAX COLLABORATE ON IPTV SET-TOP BOXES
Broadstream Communications and Humax Co. Ltd. have announced plans to
collaborate on future video over Internet Protocol "advanced media"
set-top boxes. The companies will integrate Humax's RG-200 set-top box
-- running Windows CE -- with Broadstream's Bstream middleware suite,
with first units expected to ship in Q4 2004.

INTEL TO RELEASE NEXT-GEN BIOS TECHNOLOGY UNDER OPEN SOURCE LICENSE
Intel plans to release the "Foundation code" of its next-generation
firmware technology -- a successor to the PC BIOS -- under the Common
Public License (CPL), an open source license, later this year. More than
20 years old, the BIOS (Basic Input-Output System) is the oldest
software technology in PC platforms. Intel says its firmware
Foundation code, a result of a project codenamed Tiano, "provides that
the successor to the BIOS will be based on up-to-date software technology."

NEXT-GENERATION BIOS BOASTS NETWORK, SECURITY FEATURES
Speaking of next-generation BIOS-level firmware, Phoenix Technology has
launched its family of next-generation BIOS firmware aimed at increasing
the security and manageability of PCs, notebooks, servers, embedded
devices, and the networks that connect them. The company also launched
a pre-boot environment, firmware development tools, and key application
components providing advanced device-based authentication and encryption
features.

INTEL ADDS THREE PROCESSORS TO EMBEDDED LINEUP
Intel added three chips to its embedded processor lineup this week. The
three include two in the Pentium family -- the 1.8 GHz Pentium M
processor 745 (formerly code named "Dothan"), and the 600 MHz Ultra Low
Voltage (ULV) Intel Celeron M processor -- plus one in the XScale
family, the 312/416/520 MHz PXA270.
