LOOKING BACK ON ONE YEAR OF MICROSOFT'S $3 WINDOWS CE "CORE" LICENSE
A year after launching its low-cost, minimalist Windows CE "Core"
product, Microsoft and assorted industry analysts say the program has
played a major role in helping Windows CE become one of the top embedded
OSes.

TAKE A TOUR OF MICROSOFT'S WINDOWS EMBEDDED LAB
MSDN's "Channel 9" recently posted a video hosted by Mike Hall,
Technical Product Manager on the Microsoft Windows CE team.  Hall takes
us on a 10 minute tour of Microsoft's Windows Embedded Lab, showing off
the wide variety of devices using Windows CE and Windows XP Embedded.
These run the gamut -- from the usual PDAs and cell phones, to media
players, point of sale terminals, industrial controllers, and even a
sewing machine and an exercise bike.

3RD GENERATION INDUSTRIAL IMAGING PLATFORM RUNS WINDOWS XP EMBEDDED
Matrox Imaging recently introduced the third generation of its
self-contained 4Sight imaging platform.  The Matrox 4Sight M is powered
by a choice of low-power Pentium or Celeron processors, and runs Windows
XP Embedded.  The device provides the core functionality for
high-performance and cost-sensitive machine vision, medical imaging, and
video surveillance applications.

WORLD'S SMALLEST SMARTPHONE?
At the World Handset Forum held recently in Amsterdam, Orange announced
what it claims is the "world's smallest Smartphone." The SPV C500, the
newest member of Orange's "Signature family" of Smartphones, measures
just 4.25 x 1.8 x .63 inches, weighs in at a mere 3.5 ounces, and runs
Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition.

INDUSTRIAL OPERATOR TERMINALS RUN WINDOWS CE
Pilz, a German-based maker of safety automation equipment, has
introduced a new line of color graphic industrial operator terminals
that run Windows CE as their embedded software platform.  The PMIvisu
terminals, which represent the latest generation of the Pilz Machine
Interface (PMI), are powered by a RISC processor on a custom CPU board.

SERVERLESS, PEER-TO-PEER VOIP TELEPHONY DEBUTS
Popular Telephony recently unveiled its technology concept for
serverless and switchless telecommunications, which the company heralds
as a "ground-breaking, patent-pending core technology for the
implementation of peer-to-peer, server-free telecommunications systems."
Peerio is described as a highly portable, operating system independent
middleware for embedded devices that seamlessly integrates into VoIP
ICs, IP phones, and other telephony-enabled systems and modules, and is
said to be capable of being ported to any IP telephony device.
