MICROSOFT TO SELECT WINDOWS CHALLENGE FINALISTS
Microsoft's Windows Embedded Devices Group, in collaboration with the
IEEE Computer Society International Design Competition (CSIDC), has
invited student teams to participate in the first official Microsoft
Windows ChallengE ("ChallengE"). The theme of the 2004 ChallengE
competition is identical to that of IEEE's CSIDC 2004: "Making the World
a Safer Place." Microsoft will award cash prizes -- ranging from $1200
to $4000 -- to the top 5 teams in its Windows ChallengE competition,
selected during the Microsoft Windows ChallengE finals to be held in
Redmond, WA, March 19-21, 2004.

EURO RETAILERS RING UP WINDOWS XP EMBEDDED
Microsoft announced this week that major retailers in the Europe, Middle
East, and Africa (EMEA) market are adopting or have adopted Windows XP
Embedded as the software platform for point-of-sale (POS) terminals.
According to Microsoft, retailers are choosing Windows XP Embedded
because of its retail-hardened reliability, Windows application and
driver compatibility, and flexible deployment, management, and servicing
options.

CRUSOE-POWERED THIN CLIENT COMPUTER RUNS XP EMBEDDED
Transmeta announced that its Crusoe processor has been selected for use
in a compact, light weight, fanless thin client computer system.
Transmeta says the design win supports its growth strategy in the thin
client market, a high growth segment that values the energy efficient
operation of its Crusoe processors.

JABBER WIRELESS IM CLIENTS TO SUPPORT POCKET PC, SMARTPHONE
Jabber Inc. will soon release wireless instant messaging (IM) clients
for devices based on Microsoft's Pocket PC and Smartphone software
platforms. Jabber says it currently has gateways available for
connectivity to WAP and SMS devices. According to Jabber, each wireless
IM client connects wirelessly to the Jabber XCP server, making them
technically interoperable with other IM and presence networks.

FTP SERVER FOR WINDOWS MOBILE GAINS SECURITY, SPEED
NSC has released the latest version of its FTP server software for
Pocket PC and Windows Mobile based devices. According to NSC, ShareIt
FTP version 1.6 provides new security features, an enhanced user
interface, and faster file transfers for use with handheld and embedded
computers.

ANALYST URGES MICROSOFT TO BE MORE COMPETITIVE IN SET-TOP BOX MARKET
More set-top box manufacturers might consider using Microsoft's Windows
CE .NET platform if a competitive licensing scheme were available,
according to research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics, which
expects the advanced set-top box market to reach nearly 40 million
installed units by 2008.

DEPLOYING WINDOWS XP EMBEDDED REMOTE BOOT
This technical article on Microsoft's MSDN website contains guidance for
deploying and troubleshooting the Remote Boot feature of Windows XP
Embedded SP1 (and later). With Remote Boot, you can create a client
device that does not require a hard disk or other persistent storage
device. Instead, the client device downloads a runtime image from a
network server into the client's system memory, and the memory-resident
image becomes the system startup "device".

Adlink Technology has announced a compact, rugged OEM computer system
that runs Windows CE and XP Embedded and can be used in a wide range of
specialized applications such as video surveillance, machine control,
and factory automation.

IXP425-BASED SBC RUNS WINDOWS CE .NET, TARGETS NETWORKING APPS
Gateworks Corp. has released a single-board computer (SBC) based on
Intel's IXP425 network processor. The company is aiming the SBC at
wired and wireless network routers, bridges, and access point
applications, and is providing Windows CE .NET support.

PC/104-EXPANDABLE "UNIVERSAL NETWORK CONTROLLER" RUNS WINDOWS EMBEDDED
Advantech has introduced the newest member of its "universal network
controller" family. According to Advantech, new features provided by the
UNO-2160 include a 400MHz Celeron processor, increased memory and memory
backup, and support for two PC/104 expansion slots.
