QUICK WINDOWS EMBEDDED DEVELOPER SURVEY -- WHICH DO YOU USE?
Are you a developer using (or planning to use) Microsoft's Windows
Embedded operating systems? If so, we'd like you to take about one

WINDOWS CE POWERED HANDHELD READS BARCODES AND RFID
Diagnostic Instruments Ltd. has announced what is claimed to be the
world's first fully customizable rugged "Auto-ID platform" for reading
both barcodes and RFID tags. The device, which is based on a 400MHz
Intel XScale processor running Windows CE .NET, is expected to find
applications in the asset management, inspection, maintenance, and
homeland security markets, according to its maker. Read our Device

MICROSOFT UNVEILS "EXPANDED AND ENHANCED" PRODUCT LIFECYCLE POLICY
Microsoft has announced the June 1, 2004 launch of an expanded and
enhanced product support life-cycle policy. The updated policy offers
Microsoft's customers a minimum total of 10 years of "mainstream" and
"extended" support for business and developer products, including
Windows Embedded. In addition to the expanded timeframe, the updated
policy provides increased support for IT infrastructure security
assistance. According to Microsoft, this new policy delivers "the
predictable support that customers need to successfully do more with less."

WINDOWS CE POWERS "CONVERGENCE" WEBPHONE, VIDEOPHONE
Two new "convergence" devices from Elanza Technologies combine the
flexibility of a PC with the ease of use of a consumer device. The
devices -- a Webphone and a Videophone -- provide Internet access, Voice
over IP (VoIP) communications, and web videoconferencing, without the
complication of a computer, and at a lower cost, according to Elanza.

MOBILE DEVELOPER CONFERENCE AT TECH-ED 2004 EUROPE
Microsoft has integrated this year's Mobile Developer Conference (MDC)
into its Tech-Ed 2004 Europe conference, in the form of an extended
"Mobile PC and Devices" track with over 30 targeted sessions. The track
will focus on how to develop and implement solutions for three fast
growth IT sectors -- Pocket PC, Tablet PC, and Smartphone. Tech-Ed
Europe takes place June 29 to July 2 in Amsterdam.

WINDOWS XP EMBEDDED POWERS CD/DVD DUPLICATORS
MF Digital has standardized on Windows XP Embedded as the operating
system within its EC (Endless Configuration) series of stand-alone CD
and DVD copiers. The devices require no monitor, mouse, or keyboard but
rely instead on a simple Copy/Compare keypad with backlit LCD display.

NEW WINDOWS EMBEDDED RESOURCES FROM MSDN
Microsoft has just released a number of on-line video tutorials covering
both Windows CE and XP Embedded. The Windows CE series covers topics
such as operating system and memory architecture, device drivers, .NET,
and application development. The XP Embedded series focuses on
configuring, building, booting, and debugging an XP Embedded system as
well as tools like the component designer. Microsoft also announced the
Windows Embedded Introductory Kit to introduce the Windows Embedded
family of technologies.

POCKET PC PHONE UNVEILED AT TECH ED
Audiovox Communications Corp. and AT&T Wireless unveiled an integrated
wireless Pocket PC phone this week at Microsoft's Tech-Ed conference in
San Diego. The new Pocket PC phone, based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile
software, will be available in June. The PPC 4100 features an
"unmatched combination of power, function, and form" that makes this
"all-in-one" device one of the best values on the market.

AMD STIRS ATHLON TECHNOLOGY INTO GEODE EMBEDDED SOUP
AMD, which in recent months has gained ground against Intel in the
battle for the desktop, today announced the addition of a line of
high-performance, low-power embedded processors to its Geode embedded
x86 processor family. The new processors will be known as the "Geode NX
1500@6W" and the "Geode NX 1750@14W," reflecting a new naming convention
based on relative performance and power consumption.

XP EMBEDDED IN THE COCKPIT
Xybernaut Corp. and Flight Deck Resources Inc. recently announced a
partnership agreement under which Xybernaut's mobile/wearable computing
technologies and Flight Deck's hardware and software solutions have been
combined into a single electronic flight deck management system (FDMS)
for pilots in both commercial and military applications.

WINDOWS CE POWERED POS TARGETS INDEPENDENT RESTAURATEURS
Micros Systems recently unveiled a new point-of-sale (POS) system that
targets independent restaurateurs with a "robust feature set and high
quality hardware packaging." Micros e7, the company's 10th generation
POS system, features a Windows CE .NET powered POS terminal.
