SIERRA WIRELESS ANNOUNCES WINDOWS-POWERED "PROFESSIONAL" SMARTPHONE
Sierra Wireless has announced a new line of "professional" smartphones
based on Microsoft Windows Mobile software for Smartphones. The Voq
smartphones, which combine high-end mobile phone capabilities with PDA
functionality, will feature a normal 12-key phone-type keypad along with
a unique, flip-open QWERTY thumb-pad. The first Voq phones, expected to
become available in the first half of 2003, will be based on a 200 MHz
Intel PXA262 processor and will support GSM and GPRS wireless networks.

WINDOWS MEDIA 9 SUPPORT, CE .NET DEVICES SHOWCASED AT CEATEC
Windows Media 9 and Windows CE were among the featured technologies at
the 2003 Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (CEATEC) show in
Tokyo, this week. Microsoft showcased leading hardware vendors adding
support for Windows Media 9, and highlighted two newly unveiled consumer
devices based on Windows CE .NET 4.2.

CE .NET POWERS XSCALE-BASED "CROSSOVER" HANDHELD
It's a PDA. It's a laptop. It's a new mini notebook handheld from Psion
Teklogix powered by Microsoft's Windows CE .NET operating system and an
Intel XScale processor. At about half the size of a typical laptop, the
Netbook Pro is portable and lightweight, yet delivers a full QWERTY
keyboard along with a large, daylight-readable TFT SVGA 800 x 600 color
touch display, its maker says. Additional key features include
instant-on and long battery life, and a full complement of expansion

MOTOROLA SPINNING OUT "WORLD'S #1 EMBEDDED PROCESSOR COMPANY"
Motorola Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Christopher Galvin
announced this week that the company intends to separate its
semiconductor operations -- the "world's #1 embedded processor company"
-- into an independent, publicly traded company. SPS is responsible for
such processors as the PowerPC, PowerQUICC, ARM-based DragonBall i.MX,
and ColdFire processors.

TRANSMETA "EFFICEON" CPU DETAILS COMING SOON
Transmeta will formally launch its new Efficeon processor next week at
the Microprocessor Forum in San Jose, CA. Dave Ditzel, the company's
co-founder and chief technology officer, will present details of the new
processor's technical specs, software characteristics, and benchmark
data. Transmeta calls Ditzel's presentation, which takes place on Oct.
14 at 2:00 pm, "one of the biggest announcements in the processor
industry this year."
