MOTOROLA ADOPTS WINDOWS MOBILE FOR SMARTPHONES
Ending months of speculation, Motorola has publicly unveiled its
strategy to build a family of high-end mobile handsets based on
Microsoft's Smartphone (Windows Mobile) software platform (see full
announcement below). The Motorola MPx200 is expected to be available
next month from Orange in Europe and from other distributors throughout
Europe and Hong Kong. AT&T Wireless also is expected to make the phone
available in the United States in the fourth quarter of 2003.

MOTOROLA UNVEILS WINDOWS MOBILE BASED MPX200 SMARTPHONE
Motorola has announced its first mobile handset based on Microsoft's
Windows Mobile (Smartphone) software, the MPx200. The device features a
clamshell design, GSM 1800/1900 MHz GPRS band coverage, 32MB ROM and
32MB RAM, and an SD card memory expansion slot. Our news item includes

"HIGHLY SECURE" THIN CLIENT TERMINAL RUNS XP EMBEDDED
Maxspeed announced a new, "highly secure" thin client terminal, the
Secure MaxTerm, which is powered by Microsoft's Windows XP Embedded
operating system. Maxspeed said it made use of Cryptek's DiamondAgent
IPsec software client to provide enhanced security features such as
additional firewall level access control, centrally stored client
policies, and network address translation (NAT) traversal standards.

MICROSOFT TRUMPETS TV SET-TOP SUCCESSES FOR WINDOWS MEDIA 9, CE .NET
Microsoft highlighted a string of recent successes for its embedded
technologies in the consumer set-top box market. The list spans Internet
Protocol television (IP-TV) and video-on-demand (VOD) consumer products
and services utilizing Windows Media 9 technologies, and includes seven
different set-top boxes running Microsoft's Windows CE .NET embedded
operating system.

WINDOWS CE POWERS NEW WYSE OEM SET-TOP BOXES
Wyse Technology introduced a pair of advanced digital set-top box (STB)
products this week based on Intel's 815 digital set-top box Reference
Design. The two new STBs will not be sold directly by Wyse to consumers,
but are instead aimed at OEMs and ODMs planning to develop and market
consumer electronics products, and to companies seeking to introduce new
video media delivery services to "digital living rooms" or large-format
displays in retail environments, the company said.

MICROSOFT UNVEILS HOME WI-FI PRODUCTS INCLUDING CE-POWERED BASE STATION
Microsoft announced Wireless-G, a family of 802.11g (Wi-Fi) wireless
networking products for the home. According to Microsoft, the new lineup
enables consumers to a share broadband Internet connection, information
files, printers, and more between all the computers in the home -- at up
to five times the speed of a typical 802.11b wireless network -- and
includes "powerful" security technologies. The base station is
implemented using Windows CE .NET 4.2.

EIGHT NEW ARM SILICON VENDORS JUMP ON CE .NET BANDWAGON
At this week's annual Microsoft and ARM Executive Summit, Microsoft
Embedded Devices Group and ARM announced eight new silicon vendors
developing ARM core-based solutions optimized for Windows CE .NET 4.2.
The eight are: Centrality Communications, Cirrus Logic, Conexant
Systems, Globespan Virata, LSI Logic, MagicEyes Digital., NVIDIA, and
Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas.

The Embedded Market Forecasters (EMF) report comparing the relative
costs of development with Linux and Windows continues to ripple the
world of embedded computing with discussion and dissent. This guest
editorial on the topic by RTC Magazine editor-in-chief Tom Williams
originally appeared in the Aug. 2003 issue of the magazine.

BSQUARE CONFIRMS EMF'S FINDINGS ON WINDOWS EMBEDDED PROJECT COSTS
In this WindowsForDevices.com guest editorial, BSQUARE president and CEO
Brian Crowley offers his company's perspective on the recent report from
Embedded Market Forecasters (EMF) which concluded that there is a
significant cost of development advantage to using Windows Embedded vs.
using Embedded Linux. Crowley notes that his company has been engaged
by hundreds of OEMs on a wide variety of Windows Embedded development
projects, and that BSQUARE's experience with those projects has been
very consistent with the numbers given by the EMF report.
