Mobile thin client runs Windows XP Embedded
May 22, 2008

HP has announced a mobile thin client device that runs Windows XP Embedded (XPe). The 2533t features a laptop-style form factor, 1.0GHz Via C7-M ULV processor, 12.1-inch display, 802.11a/b/g wireless networking, choice of three battery sizes, and an optional DVD-ROM drive, the company says.

Like the 15-inch HP Compaq 6270t introduced in January, the 12-inch 2533t is designed to include all the features of a notebook computer except one -- its hard drive. Instead, it packs a 1GB PATA flash module, with the XPe operating system preinstalled.

The 2533t comes with 1GB of DDR2 RAM, which may be upgraded to 2GB. It uses Via's C7-M ULV processor, supported by the CN896 northbridge and VT8237 southbridge.

Via's "Chrome 9" integrated graphics, employed here, are rated by HP as being able to use up to 128MB of shared system memory. In practice, only a fraction of this would be required for driving the 2533t's LCD screen, which has 1280 x 800 resolution. However, the 2533t is said also to support resolutions up to 2048 x 1536 pixels externally via its VGA port.

Networking on the 2533t includes 802.11a/b/g wireless, via a Broadcom 4311AG part, and a 10/100 Ethernet port. Other ports include three USB 2.0 ports, a microphone jack, and an audio output that can be used for headphones or a line connection. There is also an RJ11 connector, supporting the standard 56Kbps V.92 modem.

As mentioned above, the 2533t is optionally available with an optical drive that reads (but does not write to) CDs and DVDs, at the cost of one of its USB ports. Further, it has a connector that mates with HP's 2400/2500 docking station, said to be a convenient way to connect or disconnect power, LAN, audio, a monitor, and four USB ports all at once.

The device also has both a Type II PC Card slot and an SD slot. An available integrated smart card reader is available in place of the former.

The 2533t comes with a standard six-cell (55W/Hr) battery, or optional two-cell (28W/Hr) or nine-cell (83W/Hr) packs. Battery life is said to be up to six hours and 15 minutes with the six-cell unit.

Finally, the 2533t includes Windows XPe's EWF (enhanced write filter), which can be turned off when changes need to be made to the system, or left active at other times for near-complete protection from viruses, user error, and other causes of system corruption. It also comes with RDP (remote desktop protocol) and ICA (independent computing architecture) clients, TeemNT terminal emulation software, Intervideo's WinDVD video playback software, and the Altiris Deployment Client.

Features and specifications listed by HP for the 2533t include:
  • Processor -- Via C7-M ULV clocked at 1.0GHz
  • Memory -- 1GB of DDR2 RAM, expandable to 2GB
  • Display -- 12.1-inch display with 1280 x 800 resolution
  • Storage -- 1GB of PATA flash storage; optional DVD-ROM drive
  • Networking:
    • LAN -- 10/100 Ethernet
    • WLAN -- 802.11a/b/g
  • Other I/O:
    • 3 x USB 2.0 (two when optical drive is installed)
    • 1 x VGA
    • 1 x headphone/line out
    • 1 x mic in
    • 1 x RJ11 (for modem)
  • Expansion:
    • Type II PC Card slot, or optional smart card reader (occupies slot)
    • SD slot
  • Dimensions -- 11.1 x 8.5 x 1.4 inches
  • Weight -- 3 pounds, without optical drive
HP's 2533t, available now, starts at $825. More information is available from the company's website, here.
