Hardware/software reference design targets Windows CE feature phones

Intrinsyc Software and Enfora L.P. are collaborating on a "complete" feature phone reference design targeting mobile phone manufacturers, the companies announced today. The design integrates Intrinsyc's Windows CE-based feature-phone software platform with Enfora's OEM EDGE radio module based on a Texas Instruments OMAP 850 dual-core processor.

Intrinsyc's feature phone OS

Last month, Intrinsyc released a beta preview of its Windows CE feature phone platform, targeted at mid-range devices that include capabilities such as color screens, cameras, text and photo messaging, digital music, video streaming, and games. Intrinsyc says the feature phone market represents a "massive opportunity" as evidenced by an estimate from Strategic Analytics that feature phones will account for around 420 million of some 815 million handsets expected to ship worldwide this year.

By integrating a full-featured Windows CE-based software stack with Enfora's "industry certified" dual-core EDGE radio hardware platform, Intrinsyc says it is providing a "cost saving" feature phone development alternative, supported by mobile operating system software and radio module hardware experts.

Enfora's OEM EDGE module

Enfora describes its Enabler-IIE OEM EDGE module as a quad-band (850/900/1800/1900MHz) component that integrates all of RF and digital control functionality required to perform voice and wireless data transfer over worldwide GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks.

The module is intended for use as an embedded component within portable and handheld computing devices. It is available in versions with and without an on-board SIM carrier, in order to meet form-factor requirement of OEM's and Integrators, Enfora says.

"Enfora's OMAP 850 GSM/GPRS/EDGE module design expertise greatly complements Intrinsyc's mobile software knowledge and we look forward to working together to create a leading design for compelling, high-volume feature phones," said Jeff Newman VP of Business Development.

"This partnership with Enfora marks the first key collaboration in Intrinsyc's feature phone software development and is further evidence of its successful growth," noted Randy Kath, VP of Mobile Software Products.

Intrinsyc says its feature phone platform and development tools are currently being supplied to a "select group" of customers to gain final feedback prior to shipping the full product release next year.
