NEC home media server uses Windows Embedded clients

NEC has announced a home media server designed to send content to specialized thin clients based on Windows CE or Window XP Embedded. The "Lui" server and companion "Remoter" clients will be available in Japan during the first half of 2008, according to the company.

Styled to resemble a stereo component, the Lui (Life with Ubiquitous Integrated Solutions) Home Server PC (seen below) runs Windows Vista. It follows Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) standards for streaming content to other devices.

NEC's Lui and Remoter user thin-client technology

Along with the server, NEC has unveiled two Remoter client devices. NEC's smaller Remoter features a 4.1-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display that slides up to reveal a compact keyboard. The 8.8-ounce device features 802.11b/g wireless capabilities and runs Windows CE, though which version was not specified.

The larger Remoter resembles a sleek subnotebook, though without a hard disk drive. Using either Windows CE or Windows XP Embedded -- operating system details were not provided -- the device has a 10.4-inch WXGA display, wired and wireless LAN capabilities, and weighs 1.4 pounds.

NEC says that all data are stored securely on the server. The Remoters connect to the server via a VPN (virtual private network). The server runs Microsoft's Terminal Services, allowing the Remoter clients to view its screen using Remote Desktop Protocol, according to NEC.

A special LSI (large scale integrated circuit) on the server, combined with a proprietary data compression and decompression format, is claimed to allow high-quality video to be viewed using standard wireless networking. The server can simultaneously record two digital broadcasts, and can send video to several clients concurrently, NEC said.

Stressing that video cannot be viewed outside the home, NEC hinted that WiMax technology might be used to extend the system over a wider area, but provided no further specifics.

NEC said it also plans to offer a "Remoter Server Board" designed to add the Lui Home Server's remote access and video recording capabilities to an existing PC. PC operations and video operations are processed separately, for reliable operating even during recording, according to the company.

Pricing and plans for availability outside Japan were not released.
