Windows CE handheld performs checkpoint security

Roper Mobile Technology has introduced a handheld computer intended to provide personal identification verification (PIV) at permanent or temporary security checkpoints. The DAP CE3000B runs Windows CE and offers "endcaps" that can include a smart card reader, fingerprint sensor, or barcode reader.

Also a provider of vehicle-mount computers for checkpoints and terminals, the company recommends the DAP CE3000B for use where access control may be a more ad hoc requirement. This can include military operations, disasters, or special events.

According to the company's specifications, "special events" could be rugged indeed, since the device meets MIL-SPEC 810F standards for resistance to shock, vibration, and extreme temperatures. The base unit is IP-67 sealed, indicating that it can be submerged and operated in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes, Roper says.

The endcaps, swappable or replaceable in case of damage, are what provide the unit with its security capabilities. As detailed by the company, these include a fingerprint sensor, a smart card reader, and a 2D imager/barcode scanner.

To provide real-time database querying and updating, the DAP CE3000B includes both 802.11b/g and Bluetooth wireless capabilities. The device can typically operate for a full day on each charge of its field-replaceable battery, according to the company.

Roper says the DAP CE3000B has a 3.5-inch QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) touchscreen display, which can be operated either with a stylus or a finger. It also includes a "highly ergonomic," backlit 22-key keypad with 10 numeric and function keys plus two trigger keys.
