Compact embedded PCs target industrial apps

SSV Software Systems has introduced a pair of fanless embedded PCs aimed at communication-intensive industrial applications. The COM/PC1-800 and COM/PC1-1100 are packaged in heavy-duty metal enclosures, and support Windows XP Embedded, among other OSes.

The PC1-800 is based on a 500MHz AMD LX800 processor, and is equipped with 256MB of DDR200/266 RAM standard, 512MB optional. The PC1-1100, on the other hand, is powered by a 1.1GHz Pentium M processor, and comes with 512MB of DDR333 RAM standard, 1GB optional. Both models include a pair of 2.5-inch hard drive bays. Additionally, both provide two CompactFlash slots -- one located on the front panel, and the other internal.

Communication and I/O ports common to both models are said to include:

Gigabit and 10/100 Ethernet ports
801.11b/g Wifi via an internal mini-PCI card
4 x USB2.0 ports
10 x serial ports -- 4 x RS232 on DB9 connectors; 6 on internal pin headers
PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports
AC97 audio; line in/out, mic in
VGA out
LPT port

Expansion features include two mini-PCI slots, one holding the WiFi interface, and two "multi-I/O" slots that can be used for fieldbus interfaces or an analog ISDN/GSM/EDGE modem. Power input is 110 to 230 VAC, or optionally 12 to 24 VDC.

The devices can be wall-mounted or mounted on a DIN rail, for example inside a control cabinet, SSV said. The PC1-800 measures 10.2 x 9.1 x 2.6 inches (260 x 232 x 65 mm), while the PC1-110 is slightly larger at 10.2 x 9.1 x 3.5 inches (260 x 232 x 90 mm).

In addition to being offered with support Windows XP Embedded, the boxes also target applications based on Windows XP Professional and Linux.

Both units appear to be available now. Pricing was not disclosed.
