Windows Mobile smartphone is "world's fastest"
Nov. 17, 2008

Asus announced a Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional smartphone claimed to be the world's fastest. The P565 features an 800MHz Marvell Tavor processor, a 2.8-inch touchscreen with VGA resolution, GPS, HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access) connectivity, WiFi, Bluetooth, and a custom "Glide" user interface, says Asus.

Asus's new P565 becomes the company's second phone to sport a Marvell "Tavor" processor, following the 624MHz P552w it announced in September. From what we've been able to determine, the Tavor has still not been formally announced by Marvell, though the chipmaker described it as "sampling" in a September conference call for investors.

Tavor reportedly features in RIM's recently released BlackBerry Bold and will be officially known as the PXA930. Tavor is said to include an XScale-compatible applications processor, plus a communications processor that provides devices with quad-band (850/900/1800/1900MHz) GSM and 2100MHz UMTS connectivity.

Here, the processor is pushed to 800MHz, making the P565 the "fastest business PDA phone in the world," Asus claims. The device is described as twice as fast as "competing products in its class," and "particularly amenable to multitasking."

The P565 has a 2.8-inch touchscreen display with VGA (640 x 480 pixel) resolution. It has a three-megapixel main camera, plus a secondary VGA-resolution camera for videoconferencing. Also on board are 128MB of RAM, 256MB of flash storage, and a microSD expansion slot, the company adds.

Wireless features include a GPS receiver based on the evergreen SiRF starIII chipset, 802.11b/g wireless networking, and Bluetooth 2.0. As for wide area connectivity, there's s tri-band (900/1800/1900MHz) GSM and 2100MHz UMTS connectivity, according to Asus.

The Asus P565 includes the "Glide" interface and Multi-Home, Anytime Launcher, EziMusic, and EziPhoto applications (clockwise from top left)

As on the P552w mentioned earlier, Asus amends the standard Windows Mobile 6.1 software with a UI called "Glide" (above), touted as "cutting-edge gesture technology that enables users to perform a variety of navigational actions, such as selecting, zooming, scrolling and flipping, easily through simple flicks of their fingers." The company says the device also includes custom ASUS Today, Anytime Launcher, EziMusic, EziPhoto, and PDF Viewer applications.

Features and specifications listed by Asus for the P565 include:
  • Processor -- Marvell "Tavor" (PXA930) clocked at 800MHz
  • Memory -- 128MB of RAM and 256MB of flash storage
