HTC smartphone makes Verizon debut

Verizon has introduced a new smartphone based on Windows Mobile 6 Professional. The XV6800 has the potential to download data at up to 3.1Mbps, according to the company, and features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Another product of ultra-prolific manufacturer HTC, the XV6800 appears to be a slightly cosmetically modified version of the "Mogul," already released earlier this year by Sprint as the PPC-6800. The phone appears to have received few, if any, internal changes before reporting for Verizon duty.

Like Sprint's phone, the XV6800 will support EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) Rev. 0, providing data download speeds averaging 400kbps to 700kbps, with peak speeds up to 2.0Mbps, Verizon says. Later, the company plans to provide support for EV-DO Rev. A via a free software upgrade. Rev. A is said to increase the maximum burst downlink rate to 3.1Mbps, and to significantly improve the maximum uplink burst rate to 1.8Mbps.

The XV6800 does not have a GPS receiver, but other than that offers all the features considered de rigueur on today's smartphones. In addition to a 2.8-inch QVGA (320x240) touchscreen and a slide-out keyboard, it provides a 2 megapixel camera with flash, auto-focus, and video capture.

The days of carriers omitting WiFi seem to be mercifully on the wane, too, since the XV6800 includes 802.11b/g wireless as well as Bluetooth 2.0. Verizon says the device's Bluetooth profiles allow a complete range of functionality, including streaming music to mono and stereo headsets as well as acting as a wireless modem for laptops.

Like other Windows Mobile 6 Professional devices, the XV6800 includes Direct Push email as well as HTML email capabilities. Other bundled software includes Internet Explorer, Outlook Mobile, Office Mobile, Windows Live, and Windows Media Player 10.

Verizon lists the following key features and specifications for the XV6800:
  • Processor -- Marvell PXA-263 with Qualcomm MSM7500 chipset (Sprint's specification; processor not cited by Verizon)
  • Memory -- 64MB of RAM; 256MB of flash
  • Display -- 2.8-inch QVGA (320x240) TFT, 16-bit color
  • Keyboard -- Slide-out QWERTY keyboard with trackball navigatio
  • Camera -- 2 megapixel pixel with 8x digital zoom, flash, and auto-focus. Up to 30 seconds of video capture with sound
  • Expansion -- Micro SD slot. Supports up to 2GB card, 512MB card included
  • Wireless:
    • dual-band CDMA -- 800MHz and 1900MHz
    • EV–DO, 1X RTT Capable
    • built-in WiFi -- 802.11b/g
    • Bluetooth v. 2.0 with stereo support
  • Built-in speaker phone
  • Speaker-independent voice recognition
  • Battery type and life:
    • 920mAh lithium-ion battery
    • Up to 324 minutes talk time
    • Up to 340 hours standby
  • Dimensions -- 4.3 x 2.3 x 0.7 inches (110 x 59 x 19 mm)
  • Weight -- 5.8 ounces
Availability in Verizon Wireless retail locations is scheduled for Dec. 5, according to the company. The XV6800 is currently available online for $450, with the required new two-year customer agreement.
