Oct. 08, 2004
Developers of graphics-oriented embedded systems and devices using Windows XP Embedded will be happy to learn that Microsoft has just released a DirectX 9.0c update for Windows XP Embedded SP1. The DirectX 9.0c update improves the graphics, security, and performance of Windows XP and XP Embedded based systems and devices, Microsoft says.
According to Microsoft, Direct X is a group of technologies that make Windows-based computers ideal platforms for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. DirectX is commonly used in games and other applications requiring high-performance graphics rendering.
DirectX 9.0c is an integral part of Windows XP SP2, and is "fitted with brand new pixel and vertex shaders grouped together in a feature called Shader Model 3.0," according to a Microsoft-published article, "How Windows XP Service Pack 2 Affects Gaming", that goes into further detail on this feature.
DirectX 9.0c is a major update, impacting a lengthy list of components, including the following:
DirectX 9, Analog TV, A V Core, DDrawEx, Digital TV, Direct3D, DirectInput, DirectMusic-Core, DirectMusic-Performance, DirectMusic-Scripting, DirectMusic-Style, DirectPlay, DirectShow-ASF DMO, DirectShow-Capture, DirectShow-Core, DirectShow-Dexter, DirectShow-DVD, DirectShow-DV, DirectShow-MCI, DirectShow-MMStream, DirectShow-MPEG2, DirectSoundVmax3D, DirectSound, DirectVB, DirectX Registry Info, DXDiag, KsUser, Teletext, and TV Common.
