Windows CE barcode handhelds tout range, battery life

CipherLab has introduced a family of handheld barcode terminals that run Windows CE or Pocket PC 2003 SE. The CPT-9500 series, which target warehouse, distribution, and other retail logistics applications, offer "significantly" greater barcode reader range and longer battery life than competing devices, the company says.

According to CipherLab, it is difficult or impossible in many logistics settings to get close enough to packaging to facilitate data capture with short-range barcode readers. To alleviate this situation, the company offers the CPT-9500 series in long-range imager and laser versions that enable 2D barcode reading from as far away as 30 feet, as well as RFID support. Additionally, the device provides both Bluetooth and 802.11b wireless communications, and can also be equipped with GSM/GPRS cellular capabilities.

CipherLab lists the following key features and specifications for the CPT-9500 series barcode scanning handhelds:

Processor -- PXA270, clocked at 400 MHz
Memory -- 64 MB SDRAM, 128 MB Flash
Display -- 3.5-inch QVGA (240x320) TFT LCD, with backlight and touchscreen
USBH client support (via cradle)
Reader options:
- laser, long range laser, or "extra" long range laser
- 2D imager
- RFID
Expansion:
- SDIO slot
- CompactFlash Type 2 slot
Wireless:
- Bluetooth v 1.2
- 802.11b WiFi
- Quad band GSM and GPRS available through CF slot
Power:
- 3.7 V 4000 mAH battery, 16-hour operational time
- recharge time -- less than 4 hours
- backup battery maintains system in suspend mode for at least 30 minutes without main battery

CipherLab VP Robert Hossary stated, "Logistics applications aren't well served by the short range and limited usability of typical barcode readers.
