Real-time Windows XP, XPe adds real-world interfaces

TenAsys has added support for three data interface subsystems to its real-time extension for Windows XP and Windows XP Embedded. The newly supported subsystems are National Instruments's PCI-GPIB cards, Delta Tau's PCI-based Turbo PMAC multi-axis motion control cards, and the EtherCAT hard-real-time fieldbus for Ethernet. All are supported via real-time drivers or libraries for TenAsys's INtime software, with APIs tuned to each subsystem's unique hardware.

According to TenAsys, the API presented within the INtime environment is, in most cases, identical to that provided by the hardware vendor in the Windows environment. As a result, complex I/O applications that were developed to run under Windows, but require hard-real-time determinism in order to operate reliably or correctly, can be easily ported to the INtime real-time environment, TenAsys says.

National Instruments IEEE-488.2

INtime Support for NI's PCI-GPIB and PCI-GPIB+ I/O cards is provided in the form of a real-time shared library (.RSL) and header files (.H) that implement the NI-488.2 board-level API. The INtime implementation is derived directly from and fully compatible with the National Instruments board-level API, according to TenAsys, which allows existing applications (written to use the NI-488.2 board-level DLL for Windows) to be directly ported to the INtime environment.

Delta Tau Turbo PMAC2 Multi-axis Controller

The INtime Turbo PMAC2 real-time device driver supports up to four Delta Tau Turbo PMAC2 programmable multi-axis controller PCI cards in a single INtime real-time Windows system. Each PMAC2 card is capable of controlling between four and 32 axes of motion. The driver API is identical to that defined by Delta Tau for Windows. Because the INtime driver is implemented using the INtime Service/Message Ports model, multiple real-time processes can safely access the PMAC2 motion controllers in a system, according to TenAsys.

EtherCAT Fieldbus

Profimatics GmbH, an embedded system developer and TenAsys partner, has developed real-time EtherCAT "master" support based on the INtime real-time system running under Windows, thereby enabling a standard Windows PC platform to serve as an EtherCAT master in a deterministic EtherCAT fieldbus network, according to TenAsys.

The EtherCAT fieldbus leverages the speed and cost-effectiveness of Ethernet to implement a fieldbus network that provides greater performance than traditional fieldbus solutions, according to the EtherCAT Technology Group. (For example, 1000 distributed digital I/O points can be queried within 30µs, 200 analog values in 50µs, or 100 axes of motion can be controlled in 100µs.) EtherCAT is said to be particularly well suited for PC-based control technology. A PC-based system master requires no special plug-in card, and can be implemented on any existing Ethernet controller.
