Sprint's HTC Touch gains EV-DO, loses WiFi
Oct. 18, 2007

Sprint announced that as of Nov. 4, it will become the first U.S. carrier to offer its own version of the HTC Touch. The Touch features HTC's "intuitive touch screen interface," TouchFLO, along with Windows Mobile 6 and multimedia functionality.

First unveiled in June, the HTC Touch has been much discussed as the most serious rival to Apple's iPhone the Windows Mobile world has to offer. Prior to Sprint's Touch launch, the device was available in the U.S. only as an unlocked -- and unsubsidized -- GSM/GPRS/EDGE device, however.

The Sprint version of the Touch has received internal modifications and now operates on the carrier's CDMA network. Unlike the iPhone, it is "mobile broadband" compatible via Sprint's EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) network, though in its announcement of the device, Sprint merely touted download speeds as being "quick."

On the other hand, Sprint has apparently dropped the 802.11b/g wireless LAN capabilities the Touch originally featured. "Advanced stereo" Bluetooth is retained, however.

Sprint does not specify the processor on its version of the Touch, but this is rumored to have been changed from the original Touch's TI OMAP 850 (clocked at 201 MHz) to the Qualcomm MSM7200 clocked at 400 MHz. This brings it into line with HTC's keyboard-equipped Touch Dual introduced earlier this month, and responds to the concerns of reviewers who said the original Touch ran TouchFLO too slowly.

As the photo above shows, Sprint has integrated its own applications into the device's user interface. These are said to include the Sprint Music Store, streaming music "with access to Sprint Radio, Pandora, Sirius, VH1, and MTV," plus more than 50 channels of Sprint TV.

Like the original Touch, Sprint's version runs Windows Mobile 6 Professional software and is equipped with Direct Push email as well as HTML email capabilities. Other bundled software is said to include Internet Explorer, Outlook Mobile, Office Mobile, Windows Live, and Windows Media Player 10.

Key features and specifications cited by Sprint and HTC include:
  • Memory -- 64MB RAM; 128MB flash
  • Removable storage -- microSD
  • Display -- 2.8-inch QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) 65K-color LCD touchscreen with backlight
  • Camera -- 2.0 megapixel CMOS color camera
  • Wireless Connectivity:
    • WAN -- CDMA, EV-DO
    • PAN -- Bluetooth 2.0
  • Dimensions -- 4 x 2.4 x 0.6 inches
  • Weight -- 4 ounces (112g), with battery
  • Battery:
    • rechargeable 1100 mAh Li-Ion battery
    • Up to 4 hrs talk time, approximately 200 hrs standby time
Pieter Knook, a senior vice president of Microsoft's Mobile Communications Business, stated, "The Sprint Touch is the result of the strong relationship between Microsoft, HTC, and Sprint." If offers "the power of Sprint's network and the ease-of-use of Windows Mobile," he added.

According to Sprint, the Touch will sell for $250 ($350 before rebate) with a two-year service contract. More information is available from the wireless carrier's website, here
