Budget smartphone adds GPS, WiFi
Oct. 09, 2008

Motorola has added to its "Q" series of mobile phones with a new device using Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard. The Moto Q 11 includes a 2.4-inch display, QWERTY keyboard, three megapixel camera, 802.11b/g wireless networking, and GPS, the company says.

Touted as "fully featured but affordable," the Q11 is apparently intended to supplement the Q 9c, a similar-looking device (right) that has been selling for as little as $100. Unlike the Q 9c, the Q 11 has GPS capabilities and WiFi, and it also boosts camera resolution from 1.3 megapixels to three megapixels, according to the company.

In addition, the Q 11 is lighter and very slightly smaller than its predecessor. Where the Q9c measures 4.6 x 2.6 x 0.47 inches and weighs 4.76 ounces, the Q 11 is said to weigh just four ounces, measuring 4.6 x 2.5 x 0.46 inches.

According to Motorola, the Q 11 runs Marvell's "Bulverde" PXA270 processor, though clock speed wasn't specified. The phone includes 64MB of RAM, 128MB of flash storage, and a microSD slot that can accept up to 32GB of memory, the company says.

The Q 11's 2.4-inch screen is supplemented by a miniature QWERTY keyboard, five-way controller, four calling buttons, and two menu keys. The device sports the "sliding panels" interface that is part of Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard, and the OS upgrade also provides users with the ability to select, cut, copy, and paste text even on this non-touchscreen device.

We wouldn't be surprised to see the Q 11 turn up in dual-band (800/1900 MHz) CDMA form for carriers such as Sprint. The version announced this week, however, is said to have quad-band GPRS/EDGE capabilities, without any 3G pretensions. As noted, the device also includes Bluetooth and 802.11b/g wireless networking, according to Motorola.

Features and specifications cited by Motorola for the Q 11 include:
  • Processor -- Marvell PXA270, with unspecified clock speed
  • Memory -- 64MB of RAM and 128MB of flash storage
  • Display -- 2.4-inch display with AVGA (320 x 240) resolution
  • Camera -- Three megapixel fixed-focus camera
  • Wireless:
    • WAN -- Quad-band GPRS/EDGE (frequencies not detailed)
    • WLAN -- 802.11b/g wireless
    • PAN -- Bluetooth 2.1
    • GPS
  • Other I/O -- Micro USB (USB 1.1)
  • Battery type/life:
    • 1170 mAh battery
    • Talk time up to 450 minutes
    • Standby time up to 195 hours
  • Dimensions -- 4.6 x 2.5 x 0.46 inches (117 x 64 x 11.7mm)
  • Weight -- 4 ounces (115g)
Motorola did not cite pricing information for the Q 11, leaving that issue for carriers to decide as usual. However, it says the phone will be available in December 2008.
